Among those put to death were 61 women, at least 998 people convicted of drug-related offences, and at least one person convicted of an offence allegedly committed while under 18.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ahead of the World Day Against the Death Penalty, my mandate issued a press release on the use of the death penalty in Iran, joined by other UN experts. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DppIFZou37\">https:\/\/t.co\/DppIFZou37<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iran: UN experts urge immediate halt to executions as country drives global surge<\/p>\n<p>GENEVA (9 October\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mai Sato (@drmaisato) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/drmaisato\/status\/2108521776082743597?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 9, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The escalation continued into 2026.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amnesty reported on May 21 that since the U.S.-Israeli attacks began on February 28, Iranian authorities had executed at least 36 people on politically motivated charges following grossly unfair trials. At least 78 protesters, dissidents and people accused of links to banned opposition groups remained under death sentences; 41 had been arrested during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/alireza-sepahi-and-alireza-raisi-january-uprising-prisoners-executed-in-irans-isfahan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the January uprising<\/a> and at least five were children at the time of the alleged offences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amnesty subsequently reported more than 6,000 arbitrary arrests following the outbreak of war, including protesters, journalists, lawyers, human-rights defenders and members of ethnic and religious minorities. It documented concerns over enforced disappearances, torture, forced confessions and accelerated prosecutions on capital charges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">From Street Killings to Death Sentences<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The execution campaign followed one of the bloodiest protest crackdowns in modern Iranian history.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On January 23, the UN Human <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/media-advisories\/2026\/01\/human-rights-council-adopts-resolution-extending-mandates-fact-finding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rights Council deplored<\/a> the killing of thousands of people, including children, during protests beginning on December 28, 2025, along with the arrest of thousands more.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UN investigators received evidence of security forces firing live ammunition into crowds, protesters suffering deliberate eye injuries from metal pellets and widespread arrests of children, journalists and human-rights defenders. The judiciary simultaneously threatened detained protesters with <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">moharebeh<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014\u201cenmity against God\u201d\u2014a charge carrying the death penalty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Iran demolishing Gohardasht Prison to erase a crime scene of the 1988 massacre<\/p>\n<p>JVMI urges <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/volker_turk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@volker_turk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/drmaisato?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@drmaisato<\/a>, the FFMI and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WGEID?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WGEID<\/a> to demand an immediate halt to the demolition of Gohardasht Prison and other burial sites of political prisoners.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iuxGgbb3Cz\">https:\/\/t.co\/iuxGgbb3Cz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Justice for the Victims of 1988 Massacre in Iran (@jvmifoundation) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jvmifoundation\/status\/2107044410907353256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 5, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mrs. Rajavi\u2019s October letter describes the same progression: mass killing during the uprising followed by rushed trials, torture-tainted confessions and executions of political prisoners and protesters. It specifically cites the use of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">moharebeh<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efsad-e fel-arz<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">baghi<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to criminalize political activity and opposition affiliation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">September Brought a More Serious Finding<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two reports released in September shifted the international assessment beyond individual violations toward questions of systematic criminal responsibility.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On September 16, Amnesty published a major investigation into the suppression of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2022-nationwide-uprising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 2022 uprising<\/a>. It documented crimes against humanity including murder, torture, enforced disappearance, imprisonment, rape and persecution, mapped the relevant command structures and identified 87 officials who it said should be criminally investigated.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amnesty explicitly warned that the failure to hold officials accountable after earlier crackdowns helped create conditions for the mass killings of January 2026.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One day later, the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission concluded that repression of the 2025\u20132026 protests represented an unprecedented escalation, involving widespread lethal force, mass killings and extensive arrests. It found reasonable grounds to believe that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during the crackdown.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The significance is difficult to reduce to another expression of international \u201cconcern.\u201d Amnesty and UN investigators are increasingly documenting a recurring mechanism: protests are met with lethal force; survivors are arrested; detainees face torture and unfair proceedings; some are subsequently condemned to death.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On the eve of the World Day Against the Death Penalty on 10 October, I addressed a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, calling for urgent international action to halt executions and the killing of protesters in Iran. <br \/>I also urged the Secretary-General to\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bJozJfZsBo\">pic.twitter.com\/bJozJfZsBo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maryam Rajavi (@Maryam_Rajavi) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Maryam_Rajavi\/status\/2107815097825419511?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 7, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Question Is What Consequences Follow<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mrs. Rajavi\u2019s October letter states that condemnations alone have failed to alter this pattern.
