Operators working from Iran used ChatGPT to polish English-language articles, tailor them to editors\u2019 submission requirements and draft convincing pitch emails. Some fake personas were reinforced with accounts on X, Facebook, Instagram and other platforms. One claimed to be an \u201cAmerican freelance writer\u201d; platform data placed the account in Iran.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The objective was not merely to generate content. It was to launder propaganda through genuine media.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After the U.S.-Iran conflict began, publication activity surged. The network pushed narratives portraying Iran as a resilient victim, the United States as the aggressor and Israel as an unreliable ally. Some publishers then promoted the planted articles through their own social-media accounts, giving the operation access to audiences it could never have reached through obvious Iranian propaganda channels. OpenAI rated the article-placement operation Category 4 on its six-point influence scale.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>  Cyber Army: A Force of Disinformation for a Cursed Cause <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S3LusEN4HB\">https:\/\/t.co\/S3LusEN4HB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1509839361793220609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OpenAI did not identify the organization behind Bogus Bylines and said its activity was consistent with a commercial influence-for-hire operation. That qualification matters. But treating this case in isolation would obscure a much larger and far better documented pattern.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Only weeks earlier, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/threat-intelligence-report-september-2026?page=1&amp;utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anthropic exposed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> three Iranian state-aligned operations tied directly to named propaganda institutions of the clerical regime. They included the Islamic Culture and Communications Organization under the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the Islamic Propaganda Office of Khorasan Razavi and the Islamic Propaganda Organization\u2019s Bina Cultural Observatory. Anthropic said the operators themselves described their work as \u201csoft war\u201d and \u201ccognitive warfare.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their use of AI was systematic. Claude was employed to construct influence strategies, fake personas, target databases and propaganda manuals; transform government intelligence bulletins into multilingual content; disguise official narratives as material from independent or foreign writers; and manufacture apparently grassroots campaigns. Some material was disseminated through channels aligned with the Revolutionary Guards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/topics\/threat-intelligence\/from-prompting-to-autonomy-the-evolution-of-adversarial-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google has documented<\/a> the same trajectory. Its Threat Intelligence Group reported in September that Iranian actors used generative AI to create fictitious personas and produce state-aligned counter-influence narratives, even instructing models to behave like psychological-warfare specialists and apply persuasive and manipulative techniques in support of regime objectives. Earlier Google research found Iranian government-backed actors were the largest government-linked users of Gemini among the advanced threat groups it tracked. Their targets and interests included foreign governments, defense organizations and Iranian dissidents.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>: The Latest Regime Propagating Fake News<br \/>The concept of fake news, brought into the spotlight by U.S. President Donald <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Trump?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Trump<\/a>, is now being applied to Iran. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Facebook?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Facebook<\/a> announced that it has removed more than 600 accounts, groups and pages that are&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iq0kCwKyY0\">https:\/\/t.co\/iq0kCwKyY0<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sU19czou9D\">pic.twitter.com\/sU19czou9D<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1033093581131722756?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meta, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/27\/facebook-instagram-iran-ai-disinformation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has repeatedly dismantled<\/a> Iran-based coordinated influence networks posing as Americans. One 2026 network used fake activists, students and graphic designers supposedly living in U.S. cities, some publishing AI-generated material. Another Iranian campaign constructed elaborate fake news outlets and personas to push Tehran\u2019s regional interests.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The picture emerging across competing technology companies is therefore difficult to dismiss.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/irans-cyber-army-a-force-of-disinformation-for-a-cursed-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tehran\u2019s propaganda apparatus<\/a> is not merely experimenting with artificial intelligence.
