The more ambitious ones try to manufacture an entire language in which the lie becomes difficult to recognize.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A protester becomes a <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rioter<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A critic becomes an <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">infiltrator<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A dissident becomes an <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">agent of the enemy<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Independent journalism becomes <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">psychological warfare<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Public anger becomes a <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">foreign conspiracy<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Poverty, repression and political failure disappear behind phrases such as \u201cenemy plots,\u201d \u201chybrid war,\u201d \u201ccognitive warfare\u201d and \u201csedition.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eventually, the vocabulary becomes a parallel universe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That universe reveals two things. The rulers understand that reality is dangerous. And they fear what may happen if citizens encounter it without the state standing between them and it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Few concepts expose that fear better than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.khamenei.ir\/news\/9424\/Jihad-of-clarification-is-a-necessity-and-the-way-to-overcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cJihad of Clarification\u201d<\/a> \u2014 <i>Jihad-e Tabyin<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ali Khamenei elevated the phrase into an official mission in 2022, calling it an immediate and definite duty. His premise was revealing: adversaries, he argued, were distorting reality, magnifying the system\u2019s weaknesses and obscuring its accomplishments. Officials, clerics, state media and regime supporters therefore had to enter what he described as a battlefield of narratives.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Weekly Report: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/MEKResistanceUnits?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MEKResistanceUnits<\/a> Execute Defiant Operations Across Iran<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Vd6KYCqfi6\">https:\/\/t.co\/Vd6KYCqfi6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/2109359726152851767?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 11, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Governments naturally defend their policies. But governments confident in the reality they describe do not normally declare explanation itself a jihad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The campaign has since become institutionalized. Clerical networks, Revolutionary Guard bodies and Basij organizations repeatedly speak of <i>Jihad-e Tabyin<\/i> as an obligation, while state media report organized content-production campaigns and efforts to recruit and network young people for activity in cyberspace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deeper mechanism, however, predates the internet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Consider the regime\u2019s treatment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/article\/the-iranian-regimes-fear-of-meks-growing-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization<\/a> of Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the early years of clerical rule, Tehran systematically refused even to use the organization\u2019s chosen name. The PMOI became the <i>Monafeqin<\/i>\u2014the \u201cHypocrites.\u201d The word carried a precise theological accusation: these people might speak in the language of Islam, but they were not authentic Muslims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By the 1980s, the term had become part of the state\u2019s official vocabulary. Friday prayers resounded with denunciations of the <i>Monafeqin<\/i>. <a href=\"https:\/\/iran1988.org\/khomeini-decrees-execution-of-steadfast-monafeqin-mojahedin-in-prisons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khomeini\u2019s 1988 order<\/a> concerning imprisoned PMOI supporters asserted that they did not truly believe in Islam. During the prison killings that followed, Amnesty International recorded testimony that one of the first questions prisoners were asked concerned their political affiliation. Answering \u201cMojahedin\u201d could send a prisoner toward death; the regime-approved answer was \u201cMonafeqin.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When external diversions faded, Iran saw a marked rise in both grassroots demonstrations and the operational frequency of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/MEKResistanceUnits?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MEKResistanceUnits<\/a>. This dual escalation signals a clear transition in local agency, as the population bypasses past stalemates to assert a homegrown vision\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/2076276476782039154?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Language had become an instrument of punishment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But there is an extraordinary irony in what followed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The same state that spent decades telling religious Iranians that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/demonization-documents-statements\/understanding-the-iranian-regimes-urgency-to-speculate-on-meks-fate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEK were fraudulent Muslims<\/a> now operates in a society where large sections of the population have become alienated from the regime\u2019s official religion and from institutions that invoke Islam to justify repression.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, the propaganda adjusts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In parts of the online information space, the message is effectively reversed: now the MEK can be attacked for being too Islamic, too religious, supposedly indistinguishable from the clerical order itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The contradiction is not a malfunction. It is the method.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Documented Iranian influence operations have repeatedly shown this ideological flexibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/transparency.meta.com\/reports\/integrity-reports-h2-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta and Graphika exposed<\/a> Iran-origin networks in which fake accounts posed as members of opposition communities. One IRGC-linked network impersonated MEK supporters and Kurdish users while simultaneously promoting pro-regime narratives and attacking Tehran\u2019s adversaries.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Transformative Journey of Executed <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mojahedineng?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Mojahedineng<\/a> Freedom Fighter Shahrokh Daneshvarkar<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zsHgQe24f5\">https:\/\/t.co\/zsHgQe24f5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/2054839445744914447?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 14, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other investigations have described accounts presenting themselves as monarchists, reformists or advocates of regime change while directing disproportionate hostility toward the MEK. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/demonization-articles-analyses\/irans-cyber-army-a-force-of-disinformation-for-a-cursed-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thousands of regime-linked<\/a> accounts pose as atheists or monarchists, identities calculated to appear maximally distant from the clerical state. Aim: impersonate the audience you want to influence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, one citizen may be told: <i>Do not trust the MEK; they are not Muslims.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another may be told: <i>Do not trust them; they are Muslims just like the regime.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A monarchist persona can say it. A secular persona can say it. A separatist persona can say it. A fictitious dissident can say it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposition does not need to remain consistent because consistency is not the objective. Isolation and confusion work better when tied together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the mature form of the parallel universe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Propaganda no longer requires everyone to believe one magnificent lie. It can sell contradictory lies simultaneously, customized for communities that distrust one another. It need only ensure that each group encounters a version of reality designed to reinforce its existing fears.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Addressing the Supreme Leader by implication, he invoked the regime\u2019s own logic: Khomeini had once decreed that anyone who remains &#39;steadfast&#39; must be executed. <\/p>\n<p>&#39;Know this,&#39;\u00a0Bani-Amerian\u00a0replied, &#39;I am\u00a0steadfast.&#39;&quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cE6NRWhPaW\">https:\/\/t.co\/cE6NRWhPaW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/2054587821994689019?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 13, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That is also why <i>Jihad-e Tabyin<\/i> matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The campaign assumes that reality cannot safely be left undescribed. Every event must be named before the citizen names it. Every grievance must be translated into the regime\u2019s vocabulary before people discover their own language for it. Every opponent must acquire whatever identity makes that opponent most frightening to the audience currently being addressed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is an unintended confession in this enormous machinery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If reality were harmless, it would not require a jihad to contain it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the official account were persuasive, it would not require armies of narrators, manufactured identities and contradictory stories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And if the rulers trusted Iranians to compare what they are told with what they experience, they would have little reason to fear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/middle-east\/20260520-digital-bottleneck-how-iran-wants-to-use-internet-access-for-leverage-in-the-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncontrolled information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ultimate purpose of this vocabulary is therefore not clarification.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is to prevent citizens from reaching the most dangerous conclusion available to them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That reality may be simpler than the regime\u2019s explanation of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three-minute read&nbsp; Authoritarian systems rarely content themselves with telling lies.
