Presiding Judge Amir-Reza Dehghani called on European governments to facilitate the extradition of defendants and argued that countries hosting people accused by Tehran of terrorism were weakening their own security.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What distinguished this session from many of the preceding hearings was the judge\u2019s attempt to connect the case directly to contemporary unrest in Europe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Using France\u2019s Protests as a Warning<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dehghani pointed specifically to disturbances in France, arguing that countries which provide refuge to networks accused by Tehran of violence ultimately risk importing instability themselves. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afkarnews.com\/%D8%A8%D8%AE%D8%B4-%D8%B3%DB%8C%D8%A7%D8%B3%DB%8C-3\/1411991-%D9%87%D8%B4%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D9%82%D8%A7%D8%B6%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%DA%AF%D8%A7%D9%87-%D9%85%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%81%D9%82%DB%8C%D9%86-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D8%BA%D8%B1%D8%A8-%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%87-%D9%BE%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%87-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%86-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%AC%D8%B1%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Regime-linked coverage<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> summarized his argument starkly: sheltering those accused of terrorism amounts to adding \u201cfuel\u201d to Europe\u2019s unrest.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The clerical regime says the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mojahedineng?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Mojahedineng<\/a> has no support inside Iran. Its own judges, prosecutors, clerics, and state media tell a very different story.<br \/>By <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/khansari_m?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@khansari_m<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lgplCwc2kR\">https:\/\/t.co\/lgplCwc2kR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/2107897987984965713?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 7, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The intervention was nevertheless politically significant. Iranian state media have been highlighting unrest in European countries as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.co.uk\/Detail\/2026\/10\/18\/778592\/french-protests-reflect-complete-distrust-of-government-failure-of-neoliberalism-analyst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence of instability<\/a> and alleged Western hypocrisy, while the regime routinely characterizes demonstrations inside Iran as products of foreign interference. In the courtroom, the two narratives converged: domestic unrest in France was repurposed as an argument for European governments to restrict Tehran\u2019s principal organized opposition.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The judge\u2019s demands went well beyond rhetorical criticism. The court again pressed foreign governments to cooperate with Tehran over defendants living abroad and presented extradition as an international obligation. Previous sessions in the same proceeding have also sought the identification and seizure of assets belonging to defendants and the MEK. In September 2024, Dehghani formally ordered the identification and freezing of assets connected to those on trial.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">From Domestic Trial to Foreign-Policy Instrument<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The proceeding increasingly resembles more than an attempt to prosecute historical allegations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For nearly three years, Tehran has repeatedly used the so-called courtroom to address France, Britain, the United States and other countries where Iranian opposition figures reside. In earlier sessions, Dehghani had already questioned why governments that once listed the MEK as a terrorist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delistmek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organization later removed<\/a> it from those lists and argued that foreign officials should be held accountable for continuing to host its members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Deeply troubled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UN<\/a> Special Rapporteur&#39;s report exposing its atrocity crimes and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/genocide?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#genocide<\/a> in the 1980s, the world&#39;s leading executioner per capita is using a sham trial in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Tehran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tehran<\/a> to attack the UN. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TLSxwMB8an\">pic.twitter.com\/TLSxwMB8an<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1836733334094774613?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 19, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 57th session took that argument further by presenting the continued presence of Iranian dissidents abroad as a threat to the host societies themselves.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That creates an important contradiction in Tehran\u2019s broader portrayal of the MEK.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Regime media regularly describe the organization as isolated, defeated and without meaningful support. Yet the judiciary has now devoted 57 public sessions to <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/article\/the-truth-behind-the-iranian-regimes-legal-action-against-the-mek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prosecuting 104 of its members<\/a> and the organization itself, while repeatedly urging foreign governments to restrict its financial, legal and political space.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The language of the latest hearing offered little indication that Tehran regards the organization as merely a historical adversary.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instead, the judge depicted its continued presence in Europe as sufficiently consequential to threaten public order abroad and pressed Western governments to help dismantle the environment in which the organization operates. Whatever the evidentiary basis of those assertions, they demonstrate that Iranian authorities continue to treat the MEK as an active political and security concern.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Desperately attempting to spin new narratives about the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mojahedineng?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Mojahedineng<\/a> during its staged trial, the clerical regime is essentially undermining its own decades-long <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/propaganda?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#propaganda<\/a> against the movement. This not only weakens Khomeini&#39;s defamation tactics but also inadvertently\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WkAzHs3ZGC\">pic.twitter.com\/WkAzHs3ZGC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1789752920147206202?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 12, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">A Courtroom Claim of Fairness<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another contradiction ran through the hearing itself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dehghani opened by emphasizing the presumption of innocence and saying the court would not become an instrument of vengeance. State media quoted him promising adherence to law even when confronting allegations such as <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">baghi<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014armed rebellion\u2014or <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efsad-e fel-arz<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, corruption on earth.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yet the same session publicly characterized the defendants through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/iran-terrorism-and-weapons-of-mass-destruction-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">language of terrorism<\/a> while the so-called judge urged foreign governments to extradite them and warned Europeans of the consequences of continuing to host them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oddly, Tehran is increasingly presenting the trial internationally as a conventional judicial process while simultaneously using it to advance demands against governments with which it has wider political disputes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The reference to France made the underlying purpose particularly visible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A court ostensibly determining individual criminal responsibility was also delivering a geopolitical message: Western governments should reduce the operating space available to Iran\u2019s organized opposition\u2014or, Tehran claims, face consequences themselves.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three-minute read&nbsp; Iran&rsquo;s judiciary used the 57th session of its mass trial against members of the People&rsquo;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) to escalate pressure on Western governments, demanding extraditions while invoking unrest in Europe as a warning against allowing the opposition movement to operate abroad.&nbsp; The October 20 hearing in Tehran concerned 104 individuals [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":314561,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,845],"tags":[197,218],"class_list":["post-348901","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-iran-resistance","category-demonizing-mek","tag-mek-iran","tag-demonizing-mek"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
