A subsequent attempt to secure a venue at the Brussels regional Parliament also failed. On October 23, responding publicly to an MR politician who urged Belgium to recognize Pahlavi as the \u201clegitimate representative\u201d of the Iranian people and the unifying leader of the democratic opposition, the foreign minister rejected the request. \u201cDeciding who should lead Iran,\u201d he wrote, \u201cis a choice that must belong solely to the Iranians.\u201d He stressed that other individuals and movements also claim to represent Iran\u2019s opposition and that the Belgian government would not confer such political recognition on Pahlavi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On October 21, parliamentary leaders failed to agree on hosting him, and the planned November 5 event was dropped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Belgian outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.21news.be\/reza-pahlavi-pas-le-bienvenu-a-la-chambre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21News summarized<\/a> the outcome bluntly: \u201cReza Pahlavi pas le bienvenu \u00e0 la Chambre\u201d\u2014Pahlavi would not be officially welcomed at the Chamber.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A private meeting may yield useful photographs but it does not confer the stature of a parliamentary reception.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Iranian Associations Challenge Belgian Defense Minister\u2019s Meeting With Reza Pahlavi After Parliament Invitation Canceled <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran2026?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran2026<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/No2ShahNo2Mullahs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#No2ShahNo2Mullahs<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MUji95yKil\">https:\/\/t.co\/MUji95yKil<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IranNewsUpdate1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@IranNewsUpdate1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Iran News Update (@IranNewsUpdate1) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IranNewsUpdate1\/status\/2114805036253610426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Second Venue Falls Through<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An effort to shift the event to the Brussels Parliament also failed after opposition from political groups there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That sequence made the pattern increasingly clear: each time the visit approached the symbolism of institutional endorsement, Belgian political actors drew a line.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gs\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\" \">\n<div id=\":1d6\" class=\"ii gt adO\">\n<div id=\":1d5\" class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">Pahlavi\u2019s supporters, meanwhile, sought to cast his invitation to speak at Belgium\u2019s Royal Military Academy\u2014and a planned breakfast with Defense Minister Theo Francken\u2014as something more consequential than access: a sign that Belgian authorities were moving toward recognizing him as a legitimate representative of Iran\u2019s opposition. That interpretation was explicitly rejected by Francken\u2019s own office. On October 23, the defense minister\u2019s cabinet said the invitation \u201cin no way\u201d constituted political support for any particular form of government or political movement. Before the invitation was cancelled, <a href=\"https:\/\/irannewsupdate.com\/news\/exposing-reza-pahlavi-and-monarchist-current\/iranian-associations-challenge-belgian-defense-ministers-meeting-with-reza-pahlavi-after-parliament-invitation-canceled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">47 Iranian associations<\/a> in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France wrote to Belgium\u2019s prime minister, foreign minister and the presidents of both chambers of Parliament opposing the proposed reception and Pahlavi\u2019s meeting with Defense Minister Theo Francken. Sixteen Belgian political figures, jurists, academics and civil-society representatives separately urged Belgian authorities not to elevate Pahlavi as an alternative to the clerical dictatorship, stressing that Iran\u2019s future leadership must emerge from free political choice rather than outside promotion of another authoritarian model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Six Iranian-Belgian associations later welcomed Parliament\u2019s decision to cancel the reception, describing it as a refusal to give institutional standing to a figure without a democratic mandate to represent Iranians.
