On and around October 29, 2026, Resistance Units affiliated with the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) marked Cyrus the Great Day with a wave of anti-regime activities across Iran. The Resistance Units carried out 110 activities, including displays of placards and posters, small-group actions, and anti-dictatorship graffiti in more than 20 cities and locations.<\/p>\n

The recurring slogans\u2014\u201cDeath to the oppressor, be it the shah or the supreme leader,\u201d \u201cNeither shah nor mullahs,\u201d and \u201cWe are the children of Cyrus; we are the Resistance Units\u201d\u2014turned the commemoration into a rejection of both the former monarchy and the ruling theocracy.<\/p>\n

October 29, corresponding to the seventh day of Aban in the Iranian calendar, is a commemoration of Cyrus the Great. His tomb at Pasargadae has become a gathering place for Iranians honoring the country\u2019s ancient heritage.<\/p>\n

The occasion also carries contemporary political significance. In October 2025, security forces blocked access to Pasargadae during Cyrus Day observances. Two UN experts, alongside a former UN Special Rapporteur, have joined the campaign\u2019s weekly hunger strike in solidarity with political prisoners protesting the death penalty in Iran. The move highlights growing global recognition of prisoners\u2019 resistance against capital punishment and amplifies their voices on the international stage.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, marking the 144th week of the campaign, David R. Boyd, former UN Special Rapporteur<\/a>, and Andrea Bola\u00f1os Vargas<\/a>, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, announced they were joining the hunger strike in solidarity with political prisoners in Iran.<\/p>\n
