He divided the world between a \u201cFront of Truth\u201d and a \u201cFront of Falsehood,\u201d inserted the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) into his catalogue of American conspiracies, and declared that \u201cunity, solidarity and social cohesion\u201d must govern Iranian society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The message was not merely about Washington.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was about Iran.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">How Khomeini Turned America into a Domestic Weapon<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The official story conveniently omits what happened before the embassy seizure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Declassified U.S. cables show that Washington opened a direct channel to <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/plusd\/cables\/1979STATE010736_e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khomeini\u2019s entourage<\/a> in Paris on January 15, 1979, while simultaneously encouraging discussions between Iran\u2019s military leadership and Khomeini\u2019s representatives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Meet the hostage-takers who now run <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>&#39;s government<\/p>\n<p>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/NCRI?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NCRI<\/a> Special Report &#8211; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1191309230453796864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On January 27, <a href=\"https:\/\/search.wikileaks.org\/plusd\/cables\/1979PARIS02949_e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khomeini himself sent<\/a> Washington a private message saying his proposed Islamic Republic bore no \u201cparticular animosity\u201d toward Americans and promising that his leadership could restore stability.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whatever one concludes about American policy during the revolution, those records demolish the simplistic mythology that Khomeini\u2019s movement came to power through an uninterrupted confrontation with Washington.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The political usefulness of anti-Americanism came afterward.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When militants seized the embassy on November 4, Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan opposed them and resigned within days. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranicaonline.org\/articles\/hostage-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Encyclopaedia Iranica records<\/a> that material taken from the embassy was selectively used to portray political opponents as American collaborators and that Khomeini exploited the crisis to marginalize liberal and secular rivals while consolidating the new theocratic order.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was an extraordinarily effective trap: accept Khomeini\u2019s radical course\u2014or risk being branded Washington\u2019s agent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Iranian statecraft has been recycling that device ever since.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why Mojtaba Needs the Same Formula<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mojtaba Khamenei\u2019s invocation of November 4 comes at a moment when the state faces something much more dangerous than American rhetoric: a deeply discontented society at home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Protests continue among retirees, workers, students and other social groups. On November 2 alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-iran-protest\/iran-protests-by-students-retirees-drivers-farmers-pharmacists-and-plundered-victims-in-various-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports from inside<\/a> Iran showed demonstrations by telecommunications retirees across numerous cities, alongside other protests and strikes; demonstrators included the striking slogan: \u201cOur enemy is right here; they lie that it is America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In negotiations, weak concessions beget strong demands. When dealing with the most active state sponsor of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/terrorism?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#terrorism<\/a>, weakness begets more <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/hostage?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#hostage<\/a>-taking and the spread of terror. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ieaaOkZb6y\">https:\/\/t.co\/ieaaOkZb6y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1651201686055133184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The response has been escalating repression.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/1573\/2026\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amnesty International reported<\/a> on October 16 that authorities had arbitrarily executed at least 34 people arrested in connection with the January uprising after grossly unfair, torture-tainted trials, while at least 20 others had had death sentences upheld.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The NCRI\u2019s more recent tally illustrates the wider scale. By late October, it reported 1,186 executions since the beginning of 2026, including nearly 50 political prisoners executed since the outbreak of the latest war, nine of them PMOI members.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The toll has continued to rise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The regime is simultaneously keeping its own constituency permanently mobilized. The Basij publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/borna.news\/fa\/news\/2390649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrated 200 consecutive nights<\/a> of pro-government street deployments in September and announced that they would continue for as long as the interests of the system required.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That is not the behavior of a confident state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">What Tehran Remembers About Organized Resistance<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recent remarks from regime veterans expose another layer of concern.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ahmad Alamolhoda, Khamenei\u2019s representative in Mashhad, recently recalled that during the early confrontation with the MEK, its operations had become so extensive that security officials were losing morale and sought Khomeini\u2019s intervention to stiffen their resolve.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another state-television discussion acknowledged the MEK\u2019s historic disclosure of secret nuclear activities and complained about the opposition\u2019s access to information from inside the establishment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What to Make of Recent Remarks from Former <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/IRGC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IRGC<\/a> Commander on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/US?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#US<\/a> Embassy Hostage Taking<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GHHejwBU6x\">https:\/\/t.co\/GHHejwBU6x<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1694288376395141486?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 23, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those admissions illuminate the regime\u2019s strategic fear.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mass anger by itself can be suppressed. An underground organization by itself can be hunted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What becomes potentially explosive is their convergence: a society repeatedly entering the streets alongside an experienced Resistance network capable of organization, continuity and sustained operations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/english.mojahedin.org\/pmoi-resistance-units\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEK Resistance Units<\/a> carried out 90 actions across Tehran and 24 other cities on November 2, including attacks on Basij and IRGC facilities and anti-regime graffiti.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But Tehran\u2019s own rhetoric supplies the larger evidence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Forty-seven years ago, Khomeini used America to divide a revolution, destroy political rivals and consolidate clerical rule.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today his successor again speaks obsessively of America, the MEK and \u201csocial cohesion\u201d while protesters fill the streets, executions accelerate and the state keeps its loyalists permanently mobilized.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The propaganda points outward.
