What began on November 15, 2019, with a sudden increase in fuel prices rapidly developed into a nationwide confrontation with the ruling theocracy. Beneath the immediate economic grievances lay decades of accumulated anger over poverty, corruption, discrimination, repression, and systematic injustice. Within days, protesters had moved far beyond demands for economic relief. Their slogans directly challenged the foundations of the regime, bringing the demand for an end to religious dictatorship into the streets. The scale, geographic reach, and intensity of the revolt demonstrated that Iran’s crisis was not simply economic or social. It was fundamentally political.

On Saturday, November 16, despite heavy rain and snowfall in several regions, protesters poured into major streets and highways across the country. Yet while millions struggle to afford basic necessities, billions of dollars in revenue from oil exports remain uncollected or tied up in opaque financial networks. A recent public dispute between two regime insiders has once again exposed the scale of the problem and the lack of transparency surrounding the country’s oil revenues.

The controversy emerged during a televised debate between conservative media activist Vahid Ashtari and Hossein Ghorbanzadeh, the former head of Iran’s Privatization Organization. Their exchange brought competing accounts of oil revenue collection, financial intermediaries, and management disputes within the regime into public view.

Ghorbanzadeh stated that during the tenure of Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, approximately $4.7 billion of the roughly $32 billion in oil sales had not been collected.
