Reza Pahlavi\u2019<\/a>s November tour of Belgium and Germany has exposed significant obstacles to his campaign for international recognition. Behind the diplomatic photo opportunities and a controversial award ceremony in Frankfurt were institutional refusals, political boycotts, protests by Iranian organizations, and renewed questions about his claims to represent the Iranian people.<\/p>\n

The controversies coincided with a major setback to the political calculations surrounding his leadership ambitions: the US-Israeli war against Iran had not delivered the regime change anticipated by his supporters, and the war\u2019s American sponsors had suffered a major electoral defeat.<\/p>\n

Belgium Refuses to Recognize Pahlavi as Iran\u2019s Representative<\/h2>\n

The first setback came before Pahlavi\u2019s arrival in Brussels.<\/p>\n

On October 21, Belgium\u2019s Chamber of Representatives abandoned plans for an official reception after parliamentary groups failed to reach consensus. The decision followed reservations expressed by Foreign Minister Maxime Pr\u00e9vot, who warned against treating Pahlavi as the sole representative of Iran\u2019s diverse opposition.<\/p>\n

On October 23, Pr\u00e9vot publicly rejected demands to recognize him as the legitimate representative of the Iranian people.<\/p>\n
