Iran: A European conference calls for PMOI's (Iranian Mojahedin) removal from the list of terrorist organizations <\/p>\n
A conference of leading international lawyers – including former presiding judge of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, Antonio Cassese and former judge at the European Court of Justice Lord Slynn of Hadley – and parliamentarians was held Tuesday in Brussels. <\/p>\n
Its goal: to require the EU to remove the PMOI (People's Mojahedin of Organization of Iran) from its list of terrorist organizations. <\/p>\n
A step already taken in June by Britain, after two British courts established that the designation has no legal basis, conformed to the experts' meeting on Tuesday. The PMOI hoped that all EU countries would follow. However, it has not happen since the French presidency of the EU claimed to have new evidence against the PMOI. <\/p>\n
The organization denies [such evidence exists] and accuses Paris of giving in to Tehran's blackmail which threatened to break contracts with Total if the PMOI succeeded. <\/p>\n
The leader of the movement, Maryam Rajavi, has urged the EU to end "an abuse of power that has grave humanitarian and political consequences because the Iranian regime uses this label to justify the executions and repression." It accuses the EU of "blocking the path of change in Iran" and announced the creation of a Committee for Justice, already joined by many parliamentarians and European personalities. The PMOI had been added to the list of terrorist organizations by the EU after the September 11, 2001 attack on a request from Britain and a recommendation from the United States. <\/p>\n
