NCRI – Mehdi Oqbai, an official of the Iranian opposition group, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), warned against a humanitarian catastrophe in Camp Ashraf, following a siege by Iraqi security forces that have tighten the measures, which he described as "aggression" against the residents, the Italian news agency, AKI reported from Bagdad on Tuesday. <\/p>\n
Mr. Oqbai told AKI: "These measures included the prevention of the entry of Iraqi lawyers, foreign lawyers and delegations from abroad. The military forces prevent the entry of any car without Iraqi license plates to the city. And they do not allow the majority of Iraqi workers who were working inside the camp to enter and do their job."<\/p>\n
"The measures also include an order that banns residents from carrying cameras and wearing their uniform, as well as the cessation of any kind of construction work and renovation of the buildings and prevent the entry of all construction materials to the camp," he said
Mr. Oqbai appealed to U.S. President Barack Obama, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the UN Security Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to "intervene in order to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.”
He stressed, "The best way to prevent such a catastrophe is to return the responsibility of the protection of Ashraf to the U.S. troops," as was the case prior to the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n
In response to comments by Iraq's National Security Advisor Mouwaffaq al-Rubaie on transfer of the residents to another place in western Iraq, Mr. Oqbai said, "the residents will not leave their home after having lived there for the past 23 years and have built everything by themselves. They are protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention," AKI reported.<\/p>\n
