He was rude, neurotic and talked with a monotone voice. Each time he faced a prisoner who stood up to him, he used profanities to humiliate the prisoner while physically beating them.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, his face was unfamiliar to me. They blindfolded me whenever he walked into the cell to take a cellmate for torture. As prisoners, we were all forbidden to glimpse at the prison guards&#039; faces (who were &#039;Pasdars&#039; or members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).<\/p>\n<p>It was 1981. I was 19 years old and was being held at Ward 4 of Tehran&#039;s Evin prison. He was a prison guard and referred to himself only as &quot;Dr. Mirzai.&quot; But, I knew that this was not his real name. Torturers regularly used pseudonyms in fear of being identified by resistance members. Discovering the true identity of prison guards and conveying the information to other prisoners had become a hobby for us. We hoped that those freed from the prison hellhole could eventually expose the torturers&rsquo; identities to the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>Some prisoners never made it out of captivity. During the horrendous years of the 1980s, hundreds of prisoners, mostly incredibly young, were hanged every night because of their opposition to the regime.<\/p>\n<p>As it was the case with many others, they had arrested me for no real reason at all: Simply for selling the publication of the opposition, People&#039;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK). For this, they imprisoned me for 12 years at the Evin and Ghezel Hessar prisons. I spent five years of that period in solitary confinement. The circumstances were so terrifying that after a few months people would lose their ability to carry out a simple conversation.<\/p>\n<p>One day in 1987, one of my cellmates, Mehdi Vosoughian, told me about a discovery he had made. A student at Tehran&#039;s Polytechnic University, Mehdi was arrested at the age of 20. Coming back from an interrogation and torture session that day, he told me that Dr. Mirzai&#039;s real name is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the name was meaningless for Mehdi and I. Mehdi had taken a huge risk by conveying the identity of a torturer to me. He was executed in 1988 in the course of the massacre of political prisoners, who were mainly PMOI members and supporters. In the span of just a few months, several thousand women and men were hanged. This was Khomeini&#039;s final solution. According to Reza Malek, a former deputy of the regime&#039;s Ministry of Intelligence investigations unit, more than 33,700 people were hanged during the massacre, and were buried in mass graves.<\/p>\n<p>To test the degree of loyalty of a defector, or a Pasdar, or even a cabinet or parliament member prior to their promotion to a higher level position, they were asked by the regime to fire the final bullet killing the prisoners. Those who refused to do so were deemed unfit and unreliable. But, Ahmadinejad was regarded as highly reliable, earning the nickname &quot;Man of a Thousand Bullets.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>After being released from prison, I talked with a number of other former prisoners who had met Dr. Mirzai, and who corroborated my information about his true identity. The period during which he worked at prisons have been retracted from Ahmadinejad&rsquo;s official biography, and is shrouded in mystery.<\/p>\n<p>I had come to Geneva to voice my protest as he entered the UN building. I know at least 10 other former prisoners who are prepared to testify at an international court, which I hope would one day try Ahmadinejad and other high ranking officials of the religious dictatorship in Iran for committing crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Until that day comes, I invite Swiss officials and western democrats to exercise more command and vigilance towards a regime which must be held accountable for its crimes. There is nothing, including diplomatic relations, protocols, or even self-serving interests, that could ever justify the welcoming and shaking of Ahmadinejad&rsquo;s (aka Dr. Mirzai&rsquo;s) hands as Iran&#039;s president, because he is not a representative of the Iranian people.
