Do you think that a political transformation is clearly in sight?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maryam Rajavi: Iran is undergoing extensive change. I am very optimistic, and change in Iran is on the horizon. During their recent two-week protests, the people of Iran voiced the demand for change in the clearest possible way.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian regime&rsquo;s sham election and the subsequent developments marked the beginning of the end for the velayat-e faqih [absolute clerical rule] regime.<\/p>\n<p>The trend that has started in Iran is irreversible. It may have its ebbs and flows, but the path of these developments will ultimately lead to the end of the mullahs&rsquo; dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think that the mullahs&rsquo; regime could take a harder line with significant consequences for the people?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have no doubt that the mullahs will step up their suppression. Indeed, the regime needs to resort to widespread suppression in order to survive, just as it needs to acquire nuclear weapons and expand fundamentalism in the region. The mullahs will not shy away from committing any sort of crimes when it comes to their survival. In just two weeks, more than 200 people have been killed, with thousands more either wounded or arrested. The world was shocked after witnessing the killing of Neda, a 25-year-old girl. And, these are only a small part of the crimes committed by the mullahs.<\/p>\n<p>However, on the other side of the coin of violent suppression by the clerical regime is the Iranian people&rsquo;s determination and will power to end the religious dictatorship. Despite Khamenei&rsquo;s orders for more suppression and repeated warnings issued by suppressive forces, and despite the firing of live ammunition at protestors, young men and women have poured into the streets alongside other parts of the Iranian society and shout &ldquo;Death to dictator&rdquo; and &ldquo;Death to Khamenei.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In your opinion, is civil war a serious danger or does its occurrence have a low probability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are absolutely no grounds for a civil war in Iran. Iran is a united country and there is no basis for the occurrence of a civil war.<\/p>\n<p>There is only one real struggle being waged in Iran right now, and that is the struggle between the people and the ruling dictatorship. This is a struggle for freedom, with the people of Iran standing on one side and the clerical regime and its suppressive forces on the other. There is no other conflict in Iran among various religions or their followers.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian society is incredibly polarized. According to a secret state-run opinion poll, 95 percent of the Iranian people seek regime change. That is why I am saying that a civil war in its classic sense is not possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In your view, what are some points of strength and weakness of the opponents of the mullahs&rsquo; regime?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think the most important strength of the opposition is the existence of an organized resistance and the possession of a democratic alternative in the form of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).<\/p>\n<p>This is a coalition which has a clear and specific platform and agenda for the governing of the country after the overthrow of the religious dictatorship. It is also one that has proven its abilities in many areas. The NCRI acts both as a parliament in exile, and also has 25 committees acting as shadow ministries. All of them are prepared to start running the country&rsquo;s affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The pivotal movement in this resistance is the People&rsquo;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, whose reliance on a tolerant and democratic Islam has enabled it to expose the demagogy of the clerical regime, which seeks to commit its crimes in the name of Islam. Today, the PMOI has become the antithesis of religious fundamentalism and extremism.<\/p>\n<p>The most serious weakness of the opposition, regrettably, stems from the West&rsquo;s policies of appeasement over the past two decades, which have in effect restrained the most serious opposition of the regime. A clear instance of this policy is the blacklisting of the PMOI, the resistance&rsquo;s main movement, which was eventually removed from the list by the EU on January 26, 2009, after a ruling by the European Court of First Instance.<\/p>\n<p>Many Western media sources have on a number of occasions quoted Western diplomats as saying that the suppression of the PMOI ranks high on the list of the Iranian regime&rsquo;s priorities during its negotiations with Western countries over the nuclear issue or other subjects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you sometimes doubt your own political future?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not at all. We are fighting for respect for human rights, gender equality, and separation of church and state. We are deeply committed to these ideals and principles, and we are ready to sacrifice however we can in order to realize them.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, we do not want to gain anything for ourselves. Our one and only objective is the establishment of these principles in the future Iran. After that, everything depends on the Iranian people and their vote. The priority for us is the establishment of a democratic order in Iran. That is it. That would seal our ultimate triumph.<\/p>\n<p><a
