On July 28, the Iraqi forces attacked Camp Ashraf, located northeast of Baghdad near the Iranian border, where members of the Iranian opposition (the People&rsquo;s Mojahedin organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)) leave in Iraq. In the attack at least nine Ashraf residents were killed and hundreds wounded. Also 36 others were taken hostages, beaten and tortured by the security forces. During the attack Iraqi forces used tear gas, clubs and metal pipes against unarmed residents who were trying to stop the security forces. <\/p>\n<p>Mahmoud Hakamian from the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) emphasizes that the 3500 Ashraf residents include men and women who have been fighting against Iranian regime since 1986. In 2003, they gave all their weapons to American forces in exchange for their protection. Americans were protecting the camp until the beginning of this year when they transferred it to the Iraqi government.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>The problem is that the Iraqi Government which is very much influenced by the Iranian regime wants to close Camp Ashraf and repatriate the 3500 to Iran where they will face arrest and imminent death. The truth is that on the request by Ahmadinejd&rsquo;s regime the crackdown on the Iranian resistance is taking place in Iraq. Also Amnesty International has several times notified the Iraqi authorities of their opposition to the repatriation of PMOI members against their will to Iran. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran has urged Mr. Obama, the U.S. President, for his immediate intervention so that the American forces prevent further bloodshed by taking on the responsibility of protection of the camp until an international force under UN supervision is deployed in the camp.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: Italian daily Metro, September 17, 2009The worst-case scenario has become a reality.
