"The delegates of all 192 member states of the United Nations should shun the speech of Iran's president this week in the General Assembly, preferably by leaving the hall when he begins speaking," said Honorable David Kilgour, former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament in Canada. He added that Tehran was working to extend its repression beyond Iranian borders by conspiring to suppress residents of Camp Ashraf in Iraq, home to 3,400 members of Iran's main opposition movement, the People's Mojahedin (MEK\/PMOI).
The Very Reverend Dr. David Lowry, Director of the Center for Peace and Reconciliation at the Desmond Tutu Center, discussed the escalating humanitarian crisis in Ashraf. He quoted Dr. William Rowan, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Head of the Church of England, as saying that, "Both the government of Iraq and the government of the United States — as the agency responsible for the transfer of the residents to another jurisdiction — have an obligation to secure the rights of these residents and to defend them from violence or abuse." <\/p>\n
David Matas, Director of the International Center for Human Rights & Democratic Development, said, "The Iranian regime of the mullahs flouts international standards with impunity. For this reason," he emphasized, "the president of the General Assembly on Wednesday should deny Ahmadinejad the podium."<\/p>\n
"The United Nations General Assembly should again pass a resolution this year condemning Iran for its appalling human rights violations. That resolution should condemn the suppression of its political opposition both at home and abroad, including the suppression through the instrumentality of Iraq, of the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, at Camp Ashraf," Mr. Matas added.
