This morning an urgent session was held in Brussels by the European Parliament’s intergroup ‘Friends of a Free Iran’ (FOFI) to review the recent developments related to Camp Ashraf in Iraq which has been the home for decades to around 3400 members and supporters of the PMOI\/MEK or the People’s Mojahedin of Iran. A large number of members of the EP participated in the session.<\/p>\n

This meeting was chaired by Alejo Vidal Quadras, Vice-President of the European Parliament and the Honorary President of the FOFI. In a report of the great gathering of Iranians in Paris in support of Ashraf and the Iranian uprising, Mr Vidal-Quadras said, “3500 parliamentarians from Europe and US including the majority members of European Parliament have signed a statement to call for the protection of Ashraf residents. Besides, Ashraf is a home for human beings who are deeply devoted to democracy and hold the front line for the struggle against the totalitarian regime ruling Iran”. He further expressed strong protest of the European Parliament to a new plot by the clerical regime against Ashraf and issuing unlawful arrest warrant for a number of Ashraf residents. <\/p>\n

Struan Stevenson, Chairman of FOFI stated, “Recent rulings are a part of a comprehensive plot by the Iranian regime against its opposition. The regime’s agents dispatched to assemble at the main entrance of Ashraf in order to impose psychological torture with 30 strong loudspeakers on the Camp residents particularly the patients constitute another part of the same plot. He added, “in the face of the recent achievements of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the Iranian regime has intensified its misinformation campaign against the Resistance and those of us, parliamentarians who are friends of democracy and human rights in Iran”. <\/p>\n

Mohammad Mohadessin, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of NCRI, who was invited to the meeting as a guest speaker, explained the recent developments related to Ashraf to the participants and stated. “In a reaction to international sanctions and extensive support for the Iranian Resistance and Ashraf residents inside and outside Iran, the clerical regime at its utmost weakness and divergence intends to intensify its suppressive measures against Ashraf before the formation of new Iraqi government”. He then presented the ‘arrest warrants’ which were obtained from inside Iran by the NCRI and explained the ridiculous aspects of the warrants. He pointed out that even the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council had declared these warrants were totally disconnected with this Council and its courts. <\/p>\n

Subsequent to the discussions on the situation in Ashraf, FOFI underscored the followings: <\/p>\n

1. FOFI regards the statement signed by majority members of the EP as its mandate and will do its utmost to comply with what is called for in this statement. It will also take every measure to fulfill the protection of Ashraf residents by the United Nations and its guarantee by the US forces.<\/p>\n

2. Constant plots against Ashraf and the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI) indicate severe weakness of the regime and its excessive vulnerability in the face of an organized opposition movement. Therefore, defence of Ashraf is tantamount to defence of democracy and freedom in Iran and defence of Iranian people’s uprising which has now extended itself to the traditional bases of the regime including Bazar. Unimaginable hysterical reactions of the Iranian regime to Ashraf illustrates how genuine is the ‘Third option’ based on a democratic change by the Iranian people and the Resistance offered by Mrs Maryam Rajavi, the opposition leader. This is truly the Achilles’ heel for the regime.<\/p>\n

3. FOFI warns against the consequences of unlawful arrest warrants for a number of senior members of the PMOI and residents of Camp Ashraf and recognizes these as a prelude to new killings in Ashraf by the Iranian regime and Iraqi forces. It calls on the Iraqi government and the present Prime Minister of Iraq to immediately annul these warrants which have been issued at the behest of the Iranian regime, and specifies that Al-Maliki and his government would be held accountable for all such illegitimate rulings. Crimes perpetrated by the Iraqi government and forces against Ashraf residents must be considered as crime against humanity that should be called to account in international judicial courts.<\/p>\n

4. FOFI admires the brave position taken by Honourable Tariq Al-Hashimi, Iraqi vice-President, who declared that Ashraf residents “are guests of Iraq under the Fourth Geneva Convention and their protection and decent lives must be fulfilled by the Iraqi government”. It calls on other Iraqi authorities, all its colleagues in the new Parliament of Iraq as well as all respectable Iraqi judges and jurists to rise against the intervention of the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office and some other Iraqi state institutions as well as intervention of the Iranian regime and terrorist Qods Force in the Iraqi judiciary, and calls them all to take every measure to get the arrest warrants for Ashraf residents annulled. <\/p>\n

5. The European Parliament is closely monitoring the situation in Ashraf and FOFI  is on full alert with this regard. It will employ the necessary mechanisms to receive regular information about Ashraf developments and calls on the media as well as authorities and public opinion in the United States, Europe, United Nations and Iraq to pay attention to the threats facing Ashraf residents.
 
6. FOFI calls on the present government of Iraq to implement the EP Resolution of 24 April 2009 with regards to Ashraf, recognize the rights of Ashraf residents as protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention and allow a delegation from the European Parliament to visit the Camp and closely observe the situation there as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
