{"id":8980,"date":"2010-09-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-28T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/human-rights\/8980-announcement-of-new-human-rights-executive-order-targeting-iranian-officials"},"modified":"2023-01-13T16:48:06","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T15:48:06","slug":"announcement-of-new-human-rights-executive-order-targeting-iranian-officials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/announcement-of-new-human-rights-executive-order-targeting-iranian-officials\/","title":{"rendered":"Announcement of New Human Rights Executive Order Targeting Iranian Officials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span style=\"color: black\"><span style=\"color: black\"><strong>Remarks of Secretary Tim Geithner<br \/>Announcement of New Human Rights Executive Order <br \/>Targeting Iranian Officials Responsible for or Complicit in <br \/>Serious Human Rights Abuses<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><span style=\"color: black\">September 29, 2010 &#8211; TG-878<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Over the past several months, we&#8217;ve taken significant actions to increase the consequences for Iran&#8217;s illicit conduct.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">Using financial measures, we&#8217;ve been targeting Iranian officials and companies that are responsible for a range of deplorable actions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">Today, with the President&#8217;s new Executive Order, the U.S. will, for the first time, impose financial sanctions against those who have committed human rights abuses against the Iranian people.<br \/>With today&#8217;s action, we are imposing financial sanctions on eight government officials who have engaged in human rights abuses in Iran.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">I want to explain how these measures work and why they are effective.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">Rather than simply relying on traditional sanctions on the entire country of Iran, we have zeroed in on specific actors involved in illicit conduct that harms the Iranian people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">We have found that when we single out Iran&#8217;s bad actors and expose their illicit conduct&#8211;banks, businesses, and governments around the world respond by cutting off dealings with these individuals, groups and businesses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">The effectiveness of this strategy is already clear.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">A growing number of companies and financial institutions have cut or curtailed their financial ties with Iran.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">They have assessed the risks of continuing business with Iran, and they have decided that the risks are too great.<br \/>And we already have indications that Iran&#8217;s leadership is concerned about the implications of this trend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">We have made important progress, and I want to emphasize that our goal is not to hurt the Iranian people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">Our goal is to enact strong, innovative, and effective policies that will pressure Iran&#8217;s leaders to abandon their dangerous course.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">We will continue to target Iran&#8217;s illicit conduct in all areas in an effort to curtail these unacceptable policies, and to demonstrate to Iran that continuing on its present course will only increase its isolation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black\">Thank you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ustreas.gov\/press\/releases\/tg878.htm\">For full text click here<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remarks of Secretary Tim GeithnerAnnouncement of New Human Rights Executive Order Targeting Iranian Officials Responsible for or Complicit in Serious Human Rights Abuses September 29, 2010 &ndash; TG-878 Over the past several months, we&rsquo;ve taken significant actions to increase the consequences for Iran&rsquo;s illicit conduct.
