NCRI \u2013 A senior official of the al-Iraqiya coalition, which came out as the winner of \u200eIraq\u2019s parliamentary elections, has condemned pressures imposed by the current \u200egovernment in Baghdad against Iranian dissidents in Camp Ashraf.\u200e<\/p>\n
Zafer al-Ani suggested that restrictions imposed on the camp, which is home to about \u200e\u200e3,400 members of the main opposition People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran \u200e\u200e(PMOI\/MEK), are not necessarily directly implemented by the Iranian regime in Tehran \u200ebut rather carried out by its proxies in Baghdad.\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. al-Ani said the goal of the suppressive measures against Ashraf residents is to make \u200elife intolerable for them in order to compel them to leave, measures that he said would not \u200efall into the category of Iraqi national interests.\u200e<\/p>\n
Ashraf residents are protected internationally and there is no cause for concern about their \u200epresence in Iraq, the Iraqi leader said, but the current regime in Iran is terrified of them, \u200ewhich exposes the regime\u2019s weakness and instability as well as its meddling in Iraq\u2019s \u200einternal affairs.\u200e<\/p>\n
Dr. al-Ani, who is also the Secretary General of the National Future, said the PMOI enjoy \u200ebroad popular support in Iran and represents a political alternative to the current regime \u200eruling the country. \u201cWe have not heard about any other Iranian group that has deeper \u200eroots in Iranian society than the PMOI, which explains all the pressures against Ashraf,\u201d \u200ehe added.\u200e<\/p>\n
Dr. al-Ani also referred to the regime\u2019s meddling in Iraq, saying, \u201cThe clearest and most \u200ethreatening foreign involvement is that which concerns the role that the Iranian regime \u200eplays in Iraq.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
He added that the regime is behind the creation as well as dissolution of some groupings, \u200ethe leading example of which is the so-called National Coalition, the aim of which is to \u200esecure a second term for the incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.\u200e<\/p>\n
Al-Ani added that the regime is exerting pressure to prevent the Iraqiya list from carrying \u200eout its task of forming the next government. Therefore, foreign intervention, particularly \u200ethat of the Iranian regime, defines much of the political trends in today\u2019s Iraq, he said.\u200e<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
