NCRI – A senior US Treasury official said this week that sanctions have had a major \u200eimpact on the Iranian regime, cutting its access to worldwide financial services, creating a \u200e\u200e\u201ctremendous sense of isolation,\u201d and rendering a \u201cdramatic ripple affect\u201d across the \u200emullahs\u2019 economy.\u200e<\/p>\n
\u201cIran right now is feeling a tremendous sense of isolation from the financial sector, from \u200ethe banking sector in particular,\u201d Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence \u200eat the Treasury Department, Stuart Levey, said in an interview with Charlie Rose. The \u200einterview aired on the PBS channel on Thursday.\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Levey said, the Iranian regime\u2019s \u201ceconomy is a lot worse than they try to present it as \u200ebeing.\u201d \u200e<\/p>\n
The sanctions are \u201chaving a much more dramatic impact than anyone expected,\u201d he said. \u200e\u200e \u201cIt surprised the Iranians. \u2026 They underestimated the U.N. Security Council Resolution, \u200ethey underestimated what the European Union would do, they underestimated what the \u200eprivate sector would do, they underestimated what other countries around the world that \u200ethey thought were going to stand with them were going to do.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Levey added, \u201cIf a country that we\u2019re targeting like Iran in this case can\u2019t get access \u200eto financial services from banks around the world then that has a dramatic ripple affect \u200eacross a whole commercial sector. And that is exactly the effect that we\u2019re seeing now.\u201d\u200e

Levey singled out the mullahs\u2019 suppressive organ, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps \u200e\u200e(IRGC), which is responsible for the regime\u2019s nuclear and missile programs as well as \u200eexport of terrorism, and said although the regime is left with no other option but to hand \u200eover large economic projects to the IRGC, \u201cThe IRGC doesn\u2019t have the ability to do \u200emost of these projects itself.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cThey then try to outsource and subcontract to companies outside of Iran who \u200ewon\u2019t do business with the IRGC anymore.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Levey also pointed out that the regime\u2019s international isolation is not only because of \u200eits insistence on carrying out its nuclear weapons program, but also for its sustained and \u200ebroad support for international terrorism.\u200e<\/p>\n
\u200e\u201cThis is not just about their nuclear program. This is the country that is by far the leading \u200estate sponsor of terrorism in the world,\u201d he said.\u200e<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
