NCRI – Fresh evidence of the Iranian regime\u2019s meddling and crimes in Iraq was \u200ebrought to light on Tuesday, October 26, by the National Council of Resistance \u200eof Iran in a press conference in Brussels. The revelations came just days after \u200ehundreds of documents on Iraq were made public by the website WikiLeaks.\u200e<\/p>\n
Speakers specifically pointed to Camp Ashraf in Iraq, where thousands of \u200eIranian dissidents reside, citing threats faced by the political activists in the face \u200eof the Iranian regime\u2019s meddling in Iraq and the gross human rights violations \u200ecommitted by the current Iraqi government.\u200e<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
In light of the threats against the residents of Ashraf, the speakers especially \u200ecalled on American forces to reassume control of the camp, saying that the \u200emullahs\u2019 meddling in Iraq leaves no excuse to abandon such a responsibility by \u200eWashington.\u200e<\/p>\n
The conference\u2019s first speaker and chairman, Gilles Paruelle, who is a former \u200epresident of the Bar Association in the French province of Val d’Oise, recounted \u200ehis experience during a visit to Camp Ashraf, northeast of Baghdad, where 3,400 \u200emembers of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) reside.\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Paruelle said Camp Ashraf harbors a network of humane and compassionate \u200erelations, rarely found in the world, which is why the Iranian regime is terrified \u200eof it and is using all its might to annihilate it.\u200e<\/p>\n
Referring to the stunning evidence regarding the Iranian regime\u2019s destructive \u200emeddling in Iraq, Mr. Paruelle strongly condemned the crimes perpetrated by \u200ethe regime in neighboring Iraq and said the US cannot remain silent and has a \u200eresponsibility to put an end to it. The US should also not allow the outgoing \u200eIraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to unlawfully preserve power without \u200ebeing held accountable for his conduct, Paruelle added.\u200e<\/p>\n
Another speaker at the media conference, Mr. Tunne Kelam, a member of the \u200eEuropean Parliament, said he was one of the last people who visited Ashraf in \u200eOctober 2008 before the Iraqi government imposed an inhumane siege on it at \u200ethe behest of the Iranian regime and banned further visits by parliamentary \u200edelegations, lawyers and families.\u200e![\"Brusseles](\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/10\/mo-2.jpg\" "\\"mo-2\\"")

Mr. Kelam, who serves in the EP\u2019s Foreign Affairs Committee and the Iraq \u200edelegation, is also the Vice Chairman of the Friends of a Free Iran intergroup in \u200ethe European Parliament.\u200e<\/p>\n
He praised Ashraf as a society that engenders strongly established humane \u200erelations. The Iranian regime is extremely terrified of the residents, he added, for \u200etheir political position and because they are an inspiration to Iranian youths for \u200eexemplifying a future Iranian society that is liberated and free.\u200e<\/p>\n
Pointing to the recent revelations about the Iranian regime\u2019s role in Iraq, Mr. \u200eKelam said such crimes would be profoundly painful for any human being to \u200ediscover.\u200e<\/p>\n
\u200e\u201cWe have warned time and again about the situation in Ashraf and now the \u200egravity of those warnings has been confirmed. We are reminding the US of its \u200eobligations towards Ashraf residents, obligations which it cannot refuse.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Kelam added, \u201cAt the European Parliament, we passed a very unambiguous \u200eresolution on Ashraf, whereby the European people\u2019s elected representatives \u200ecalled for the recognition of the rights of the residents as protected persons \u200eunder the Fourth Geneva Convention.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cWe are calling on the US forces to return to Ashraf and also for the \u200eUNAMI monitoring team to be stationed there.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
Kelam added that this is a call not only made by the European Parliament but \u200ealso 4,000 other lawmakers around the world who have gathered to form the \u200eCommittee in Search of Justice for Ashraf residents.\u200e<\/p>\n
\u200e\u201cThis shows that democrats around the world stand with the PMOI, which is the \u200emain Iranian opposition movement,\u201d he said.\u200e<\/p>\n
Mohammad Mohaddessin, Chairman of the NCRI Foreign Affairs Committee, \u200ealso spoke at the conference, declaring \u201cfull agreement with Iraqi democratic \u200eforces such as the al-Iraqiya bloc led by Dr. Ayad Allawi, who have called for an \u200einternational tribunal to put on trial Maliki, those who colluded with him and \u200eother Iranian regime agents in Iraq.\u201d This as an imperative, he said.\u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Mohaddessin said, \u201cUnfortunately, the real magnitude of the crimes \u200eperpetrated in Iraq by the clerical regime and the government it backs in \u200eBaghdad has yet to be grasped. Although the recent revelations [on WikiLeaks] \u200eonly cover a period up to the end of 2009, our reports indicate that the wave of \u200ecrimes continued to take place throughout the year 2010 up to today.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
\u200e\u201cOver the past seven years, the Iranian Resistance revealed more than 4,300 \u200econcrete reports and information about Tehran\u2019s meddling in Iraq and passed \u200eover this information to the relevant authorities.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
\u200e\u201cAs just one example of these cases was the revelation that we made four years \u200eago about the names and particulars of over 32,000 Iraqi agents of the Iranian \u200eregime who were on the monthly payroll of the regime.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
Mohaddessin added that the Iranian regime\u2019s meddling has not only continued \u200eto this day but has actually exacerbated due to the mullahs\u2019 plan to pave the way \u200efor Maliki\u2019s second term as prime minister.\u200e<\/p>\n
After citing multiple examples of the clerical regime\u2019s meddling in Iraq, \u200eincluding the smuggling of arms and terrorist groups to Iraq, Mr. Mohaddessin \u200erevealed a document demonstrating to what extent Maliki has been serving the \u200eIranian regime\u2019s interests in Baghdad. The document, dated November 11, 2009, \u200ewhich was obtained by the Iranian Resistance from inside the regime\u2019s terrorist \u200eQods Force, is related to the Iraqi prime minister\u2019s office. \u200e<\/p>\n
Mr. Mohaddessin added, \u201cSadly, despite the existence of incredibly obvious and \u200eclear facts, because of its policy of appeasement vis-\u00e0-vis Tehran and in recent \u200eyears due to President Obama\u2019s decision to pursue a policy of direct and \u200eunconditional negotiations with the regime, the US government effectively \u200efacilitated the regime\u2019s attempts to export terrorism abroad and carry out brutal \u200eand systematic human rights violations in Iran.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
One of the most clear outcomes of this failed policy, he said, \u201chas been \u200eWashington\u2019s decision to abandon its international obligations with respect to \u200eCamp Ashraf, where 3,400 PMOI members reside in Iraq, and to violate an \u200eagreement that it had signed with every single one of the residents, who are \u200eprotected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n

\u200e\u201cIn 2008, we, the lawyers and jurists defending Ashraf, and parliamentary \u200ecommittees called on the US government on multiple occasions to refrain from \u200ehanding over the protection of Ashraf residents to Iraqi forces, and warned that \u200esuch a transfer would act as a harbinger for the occurrence of a humanitarian \u200ecatastrophe. The US government responded by saying that the Iraqi government \u200ehas given assurances that it will treat the residents in accordance with \u200einternational and humanitarian standards.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
The revealed documents, Mohaddessin said, \u201cclearly show that during the time \u200ethat President Obama has been in the White House, both the Iranian regime\u2019s \u200emeddling and the criminal conduct of the Maliki government have not only \u200edecreased but have actually increased. Suppressive actions against Camp Ashraf \u200eover the past two years, in particular the horrendous crimes perpetrated on July \u200e\u200e28 and 29, 2009, the inhumane two-year-long siege on the camp, and the 9-\u200emonth-long psychological torture of the residents using 80 powerful \u200eloudspeakers, are examples of some of these destructive measures.\u201d\u200e<\/p>\n
Mohaddessin concluded that in order to successfully distance itself from such a \u200ecrime-ridden case, the US should take urgent measures, most importantly the \u200efollowing:\u200e<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Ending the Iranian regime\u2019s meddling in Iraq and setting up an \u200einternational tribunal to investigate the crimes of Maliki, those who \u200ecollaborated with him, and the Iranian regime\u2019s agents in Iraq for \u200ecommitting crimes against humanity;\u200e<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Removing the PMOI from the US list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, a \u200elisting that is part of the same failed policy;\u200e<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Reassuming the protection of Ashraf residents, establishing US forces in \u200eAshraf, and subsequently posting a UNAMI monitoring team in the camp, \u200eand making efforts to expel Iraqi forces from inside Camp Ashraf in order \u200eto thwart the occurrence of another catastrophe;\u200e<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Reaffirming the fact that Ashraf residents remain to be \u201cprotected \u200epersons\u201d under the Fourth Geneva Convention and must continue to \u200eenjoy the fundamental rights and protections offered by this convention, \u200eand also taking steps to lift the unjust 22-month-long siege on Ashraf, to \u200eend the 9-month-long psychological torture of the residents and to expel \u200ethe agents of the regime\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence who have camped out \u200eat Ashraf\u2019s main gate and southern flank illegally and solely with the help \u200eand backing of the Iraqi government and forces.\u200e<\/p>\n
