{"id":9483,"date":"2010-12-18T10:43:46","date_gmt":"2010-12-18T10:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/statements\/iran-resistance\/9483-irans-nuclear-program-is-regime-change-the-way-to-stop-it"},"modified":"2023-01-13T18:33:36","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T17:33:36","slug":"irans-nuclear-program-is-regime-change-the-way-to-stop-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/irans-nuclear-program-is-regime-change-the-way-to-stop-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran&#8217;s nuclear program: Is regime change the way to stop it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"sd\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-36451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/12\/sd.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"margin: 5px;float: left\" width=\"200\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/sd.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/sd-100x70.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR<\/strong> &#8211; US foreign policy conservatives are pressing for a new approach to Iran that ramps up support for the Iranian opposition and revives the Bush-era goal of regime change in Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Borne of two catalysts \u2013 frustration over President Obama\u2019s attempts at engagement with the Iranian regime, and anticipation of the more-Republican Congress taking office in January \u2013 the push for a harder line toward Iran looks beyond economic sanctions for pressuring the Tehran regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pro-democracy initiatives and overt support for the Iranian opposition are touted as the best way of felling two birds with one stone: Iran\u2019s advancing nuclear program, and the regime developing it. The hardliners are more likely to espouse military action against Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities, but support for that route is by no means universal among them.<\/p>\n<p>Among the top priorities of the members of Congress, former Bush administration officials, and Iran experts touting an overtly anti-regime policy is removal of an exiled Iranian opposition group \u2013 the People\u2019s Mojahedin of Iran or the MEK (Mujahideen-e Khalq) \u2013 from the State Department\u2019s list of foreign terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur effort to support freedom in Iran is \u2026 weak and inconsistent at its very best,\u201d says Frances Townsend, former national security adviser to President Bush for homeland security and counterterrorism. Removing the MEK from the terrorist list, she adds, would send Iranians the message that \u201cour policy goals are a reflection of our values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holdouts on terrorist listing<br \/>It would also end a situation where Washington and Tehran are the last two governments designating the MEK a terrorist organization, Ms. Townsend says. The Clinton administration first added the MEK to the list in 1997 on evidence that the organization was responsible for American and Iranian deaths \u2013 and in the hopes of opening the way to dialogue with Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Britain and the European Union have removed the MEK from their terrorist organization lists, while Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is reviewing the US designation.<\/p>\n<p>Townsend spoke at a Washington symposium Friday on US policy and the Iranian opposition that offered a flavor of where the debate over the administration\u2019s approach to Iran is headed. The tone was similar to that of a House hearing on Iran earlier this month where both Republican and Democratic members of Congress pummeled administration officials over what they called an ineffective policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is not that a tough approach [to Iran] has failed,\u201d said House Foreign Affairs Committee member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R) Florida \u201cbut that it has yet to be fully tried.\u201d Representative Ros-Lehtinen is set to become the committee\u2019s chairwoman in January.<\/p>\n<p>Administration officials are hinting that another round of tougher economic sanctions will be coming in early 2011. But the advocates of a radically different Iran policy dismiss the administration\u2019s stated goal of using the sanctions to force Tehran into a dialogue as ineffective and even immoral.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the Obama administration sees tougher economic sanctions as a way \u201cto get the regime [in Tehran] to the bargaining table,\u201d Townsend adds, \u201cIs that really all?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking at the Friday symposium, former attorney general Michael Mukasey was even more strident, placing \u201cthe regime in Tehran\u201d at the \u201ccenter\u201d of an \u201cIslamism that threatens civilization as we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A stain&#8217; on US honor<br \/>He called a policy that places dialogue with the Tehran regime above support for the democratic opposition \u201ca stain on the honor of the United States,\u201d and he said that removing the MEK from the terrorist list and \u201coffering all possible overt and covert support to the opposition\u201d could at least begin to remove that stain.<\/p>\n<p>A House resolution supporting a delisting of the MEK already has more than 100 co-sponsors and signers, with supporters predicting a rush of additional supporters in the new Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking at the symposium, former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said that eliminating the regime in Tehran \u201cshould be the proudly declared policy of the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also had a word of advice for a new Congress that wants to pressure the Obama administration to take a tougher line with Tehran.
