{"id":9513,"date":"2010-12-22T09:14:08","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T09:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/human-rights\/9513-un-shows-deep-concern-over-irans-rights-record"},"modified":"2023-01-13T18:39:07","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T17:39:07","slug":"un-shows-deep-concern-over-irans-rights-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/un-shows-deep-concern-over-irans-rights-record\/","title":{"rendered":"UN shows &#8216;deep concern&#8217; over Iran&#8217;s rights record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"un\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-36481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/12\/un.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"margin: 200px 5px;float: left;border: black 5px solid\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/un.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/un-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/un-160x120.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>UNITED NATIONS, Dec 22, 2010 (AFP) &#8211; The UN General Assembly on Tuesday approved a resolution expressing &#8220;deep concern&#8221; over &#8220;recurring&#8221; human rights violations in Iran, where authorities have been targeting rights lawyers in their ongoing crackdown on dissent.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution, approved 78-45 with 59 abstentions, follows a December 13 letter from more than 80 leading world figures urging Iran to free Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the woman sentenced to death by stoning in a case that has attracted global attention. <\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly &#8220;expresses deep concern at serious ongoing and recurring human rights violations&#8221; in Iran, such as &#8220;torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including flogging and amputations.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The Assembly also noted &#8220;the continuing high incidence and dramatic increase in the carrying out of the death penalty in the absence of international recognized safeguards, including public executions&#8221; by stoning and hanging.<br \/>The Assembly decried the used of capital punishment on people who were younger than 18 at the time of the crime.<br \/>The resolution also noted &#8220;pervasive gender inequality and violence against women, a continued crackdown on women&#8217;s human rights defenders, arrests, violation repression and sentencing of women exercising their right to peaceful assembly.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The resolution noted the severe limitations on freedom of thought and freedom of religion in Iran.
