{"id":9798,"date":"2011-02-03T10:14:51","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T10:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/human-rights\/9798-sanction-iranian-regime-for-rights-abuses-european-lawmakers-tell-eu"},"modified":"2023-01-13T19:41:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T18:41:26","slug":"sanction-iranian-regime-for-rights-abuses-european-lawmakers-tell-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/sanction-iranian-regime-for-rights-abuses-european-lawmakers-tell-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanction Iranian regime for rights abuses, European lawmakers tell EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"3969387870_5519149f51\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-36791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/02\/3969387870_5519149f51.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"margin: 5px;float: left\" width=\"200\" height=\"222\" \/>NCRI &#8211; Members of the European Parliament\u2019s Foreign Affairs Committee said in a resolution on Tuesday that the European Union should devise a new and broader strategy towards Iran, which goes beyond the nuclear issue and addresses the regime\u2019s human rights record and regional role.<\/p>\n<p>According to the European Parliament\u2019s official website, the lawmakers called \u201con EU foreign ministers to impose sanctions targeting Iranian officials responsible for serious human rights abuses since the disputed presidential election of June 2009, in line with similar measures taken by the USA last September.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The committee strongly condemned the regime\u2019s barbaric execution of Ms. Zahra Bahrami, a Dutch-Iranian citizen, on Saturday. It added that it \u201cdeeply regrets that the number of executions in Iran in 2009 was the highest in the past ten years, making Iran the country with the highest number of executions per capita in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian regime has dramatically stepped up barbaric executions, especially of dissidents, since the beginning of the year, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights confirming this weeks that close to 70 people have been executed in the last month alone.<\/p>\n<p>The members of the Foreign Affairs Committee also said that, given the regime\u2019s continuing refusal to co-operate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), \u201cadditional sanctions have become the logical consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislators also underscored the \u201cIranian people\u2019s growing aspirations for democratic change.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NCRI &ndash; Members of the European Parliament&rsquo;s Foreign Affairs Committee said in a resolution on Tuesday that the European Union should devise a new and broader strategy towards Iran, which [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[175],"class_list":{"0":"post-9798","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-human-rights","7":"tag-updated"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
