
Speaking with the al-Arabia TV on Friday, Khaddam said that overthrowing Syrian regime will have a negative and widespread impact on the Iranian regime, because the Syrian regime has made the best opportunities available for the Iranian regime to use for spreading its influence in the countries in the region from Afghanistan to Iraq and Lebanon.
Khaddam added: Regime change in Syria will have very undesirable political consequences for its ally in Iran. The Iranian regime will no longer be able to maneuver in the international circles around the issue of Palestine, Lebanon will be freed from under its influence, and it could not play a role in Iraq anymore.
Nevertheless, Khaddam stressed that the Iranian regime cannot assist Bashar Assad’s regime any more than it has already done.
The Syrian politician mentioned the United Nation’s responsibilities toward the Syrian people and said: The UN is obliged to use all pressure levers for defending the rights of the Syrian people and prevent their killing by Assad’s government.
