Iran Protests: Demonstrations and Strikes Spread Across Multiple Cities on August 27, 2024

In the capital, Tehran, nurses continued their strikes and protests today, demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Meanwhile, creditors of the state-backed carmaker Rigan Khodro rallied outside the “special complex for dealing with economic crimes” to protest against corrupt financial practices and lack of government action.

Additionally, political prisoners in Tehran and several other prisons across Iran continued their participation in the “No to Executions” campaign, protesting the recent spike in executions under the newly appointed government. The prisoners have urged the international community to support their cause against the death penalty in Iran.

Takestan, Northwest Iran: Citizens took to the streets in Takestan to protest the arrest of several defrauded creditors of the state-backed Rezayat Khodro, demanding accountability for the company’s corrupt practices.

Neyshabur, Northeast Iran: Around 600 workers from Khorasan Steel went on strike, protesting unpaid wages and unfair changes to compensation policies. Additionally, nurses in Neyshabur continued their protests and strikes, demanding higher wages and improved working conditions.

Ilam, Western Iran: Nurses in Ilam continued their protests in front of the provincial governorate, reiterating their demands for the payment of unpaid salaries, higher wages, better working conditions, and changes to overtime work rules.

Bandar Abbas, Southern Iran: In Bandar Abbas, nurses gathered in front of the provincial governorate, chanting for their rights and demanding higher wages and better working conditions, stating, “We don’t want promises, we want our rights!”

Isfahan, Central Iran: Nurses at Issa Bin Maryam Hospital in Isfahan continued their protest rally, demanding better working conditions and higher wages. They voiced their dissatisfaction with chants such as “20,000 tomans (~$0.33) for overtime work, shame on you!”

Kermanshah, Western Iran: Kermanshah saw continued protest rallies by nurses and healthcare workers, calling for higher wages and better working conditions and expressing frustration with unfulfilled promises.

Yazd, Central Iran: Nurses from Rahnamaun and Sadoughi Hospitals in Yazd held rallies today, chanting, “Nurses will die but won’t accept disgrace!” as they demanded better working conditions and fair wages.

Hamedan, Western Iran: In Hamedan, nurses persisted in their weeks-long protests in front of the provincial governorate, calling for improved pay and working conditions.

Bushehr, Southern Iran: Medical emergency workers in Bushehr held a protest rally in conjunction with the nationwide strikes of nurses, demanding higher wages and better working conditions. The protest was met with force by security forces, leading to clashes.

Jajrud, Northern Iran: Industrialists in Jajrud blocked the Haraz road in protest against ongoing power outages, highlighting the frustrations among different sectors in the region.

Across Iran, employees of multiple refineries of the South Pars Gas Company also went on strike, protesting not receiving their full salaries, adding to the widespread labor unrest in the country.
