Iranians in Washington also held a similar demonstration outside the Iraqi embassy. The demonstrators carried banners and placards calling on the Iraqi officials and the human rights organizations including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to intervene in order to prevent a human catastrophe in Iraq.
For more than two decades, the main Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) has maintained a presence in Iraq. Currently nearly 3,500 members of the PMOI reside in Camp Ashraf, Iraq.
The demonstrators stressed that the displacement of Ashraf residents who are recognized as protected persons under the Geneva Convention, is absolutely illegal and a crime against humanity which would pave the way for a human catastrophe. They called for the return of the responsibility for the protection of Camp Ashraf to the U.S. forces.
A delegation representing the participants met with the Iraqi embassy officials and shared their concerns with them.
