Iraqi parliamentarian demands lifting of siege on Iranian dissidents in Ashraf

Usama al-NajafiNCRI – A member of the Iraqi Parliament has demanded the lifting of the siege imposed on Camp Ashraf, northeast of Baghdad, where members of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) are located, according to an Iraqi daily on Saturday.

The daily al-Nour wrote, “Usama al-Najafi, member of Parliament from the National List, said that Iranian interference in Iraqi affairs challenge Iraq's sovereignty and is an attempt to fill the void in Iraq. According to him, Iran's current involvement has the greatest and most profound impact on Iraq.”

“In his remarks yesterday, al-Najafi said that despite the fact that American forces have retreated from cities they are still influential.”

“al-Najafi added that the demand to lessen their involvement is legal, but at the same time this must be also be the approach taken towards all foreign forces attempting to sway control in Iraq.”

“al-Najafi said the pressure imposed on Iranian political refugees in Ashraf City is carried out with the aim of forcing them out of Iraq.” He was referring to about 3,400 members of the main Iranian opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), who reside in Ashraf City.

“He said that members of the PMOI are political refugees in accordance with international treaties and the Geneva Conventions, and as long as they remain on Iraqi soil all of their humanitarian needs and medical treatments must be provided.”

“He condemned the siege on Ashraf city which has escalated in the past two months with the prevention of entry of medical services, which violates all international treaties. He demanded an end to the suffering of the city's residents by lifting the siege against them.”
