In a clear indication of the Iranian regime’s escalating diplomatic isolation, the Netherlands has refused to issue visas to Iran’s national sitting volleyball team, effectively barring them from participating in an international tournament. Despite having official invitations and completing all necessary registrations, the Dutch embassy’s decision reflects a broader reluctance among European nations to engage with Tehran’s representatives.
This incident is not an isolated case. Other European countries, including Hungary, Greece, Albania, Austria, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Belgium, have similarly denied visas to Iranian athletes across a range of sports. Iranian state media has reported on this trend, underscoring the regime’s increasing international isolation.
Shargh, a state-run newspaper, noted that “the bitter series of visa denials to Iranian athletes continues in an agonizing manner.” The paper highlighted the latest incident involving the Netherlands, adding to a growing list of European nations refusing entry to Iranian sports teams.

Etemad, another state-run outlet, reported that “the men’s national sitting volleyball team was prevented from traveling to the international tournament in the Netherlands due to the embassy’s refusal to issue visas.”
Tabnak, a government-affiliated news site, mentioned that “previously, European countries such as Hungary, Greece, Albania, Austria, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Belgium have also refused visas for Iranian athletes in sports like karate, wrestling, fencing, tennis, taekwondo, golf, cycling, and others.”
Despite the Iranian officials bolstering in state media about the regime’s “diplomatic achievements” on the international stage, these actions indicate an increasing trend of European countries distancing themselves from the clerical dictatorship.
These collective actions underscore a significant and growing rift between Iran and the international community, fueled by the regime’s support for global terrorism and its egregious human rights violations.
