NCRI – Iraqi forces are obstructing Camp Liberty residents from taking urgent measures to protect themselves from further deadly attacks – and United Nations officials are taking no action to help them, the Iranian Resistance can reveal.
The UN and the United States must now return all Liberty residents to Ashraf as soon as possible, or bear directly responsibility for any further attacks on the defenseless occupants of the camp, the Resistance has warned.
A statement issued by the Iranian Resistance said today: “The Iraqi forces taking orders of the Iraqi Prime Ministry’s office are obstructing every possible protective measure taken by the residents in Camp Liberty in the aftermath of deadly missile attack on the camp that killed 7 and injured 100 residents.
“Iraqi forces have prevented the entry of cranes and flat-bed trucks rented by the residents to transfer and install a small number of bunkers and protective T-walls.”
And the protective measures were being blocked even as the Iranian regime has threatened even harsher attacks against Camp Liberty and its highly vulnerable population, the statement said.
It added: “On Monday, February 25, Iraqi forces specified an area as the permitted zone for the transfer of protective bunkers to Camp Liberty.
“However, in a flagrant stonewalling, they only allowed a limited number of bunkers – which lack sidewalls and are practically useless – to be transferred into the camp.”
And when cranes and flat-bed trucks rented by the residents at great cost to transfer T-walls arrived at Liberty the next day, the Iraqi forces delayed the delivery of the machinery for hours outside the camp walls, the statement said.
Iraqi forces also threatened the drivers to return the flat-bed trucks and cranes, while at the same time Iraqi Prime Ministry agents also prevented the delivery of 1,000 sandbags purchased by the residents to be used as protective means.
The statement went on to name Captain Heidar Azab Mashi – a known Iraqi government henchman who had a direct role in the two massacres of Ashraf residents in 2009 and 2011 – as the man supervising the imposition of these restrictions and preventing even minimum protective measures in Liberty under various pretexts.
The Restistance said: “UNAMI officials and their monitoring team, being hourly informed of these obstructive measures, have remained silent in the face of these inhumane measures that are clearly aimed at inflicting more casualties in further possible attacks against the residents.
“They are neither protesting nor taking any serious action in this regard.
“Re-emphasizing that Liberty lacks minimum protective and security means and a repeat of the February 9th massacre may occur at any time, the Iranian Resistance calls on the US government and UN – who are directly responsible regarding the protection of Liberty residents – to take urgent action to return the residents back to their 26-year long home in Ashraf, or else they will be directly responsible for any casualties inflicted on Liberty residents.”
