The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign said it had entered its 138th week with hunger strikes across 62 prisons in Iran, calling on the United Nations Third Committee and UN human rights officials to take practical action to halt executions in the country.
In a statement dated Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the campaign linked its latest action to the approaching fourth anniversary of the 2022 nationwide protests sparked by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. The statement said the campaign “salutes all those who lost their lives in this uprising, especially the heroic women who played a leading role in these protests.”
The campaign said the names of nearly 700 protesters killed during the unrest had been published, accusing the authorities of violent repression. It said the protests had not disappeared despite what it called “savage suppression,” adding that they continued “like fire under the ashes” until the country reaches “freedom, equality, democracy and the establishment of popular rule.”
The statement accused Iran’s ruling establishment of relying on executions and repression to maintain power. It said authorities had issued new death sentences this week and carried out executions, adding that at least 61 people had been executed since the beginning of Shahrivar, the Iranian month that began in late August.

The campaign also criticized the judiciary, saying death sentences and threats were being used to silence dissent ahead of the start of the academic year. It said the authorities were attempting “to silence the voice of the university, the stronghold of freedom, equality and resistance.”
According to the statement, supporters abroad held gatherings in cities including Paris, Cologne and London to mark the anniversary of the 2022 uprising and back the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign. It said another gathering was planned outside the United Nations office in Vienna on Tuesday, coinciding with the campaign’s hunger strike.
The statement said former UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran Prof. Javaid Rehman had expressed support for the campaign in a position against executions.

The campaign urged the UN Third Committee, Mai Sato and other UN rapporteurs to condemn what it described as widespread human rights violations, repression of the Iranian people and mass executions. It called on officials to present a “practical solution to stop executions and the repression of the people of Iran.”
Members of the campaign said prisoners were on hunger strike on Tuesday in 62 prisons, including Evin Prison, Ghezel Hesar Prison, Greater Tehran Prison, Qarchak Prison, Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, Zahedan Prison, Dizelabad Prison in Kermanshah, Sanandaj Prison, Urmia Prison, Tabriz Prison, Mashhad Prison and Iranshahr Prison, among others.
