The Friends of a Free Iran Committee in Nordic Countries (FOFIAF) has issued an urgent appeal to the international community, calling for immediate intervention to stop the imminent executions of two political prisoners in Iran, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani. The appeal follows news of a new wave of executions under the Iranian regime, which has claimed over 160 lives since the inauguration of the new president.

Ehsani, 69, and Hassani, 48, were arrested during the popular uprisings in late 2022 and subsequently transferred to the intelligence section of Evin Prison in Tehran, where they were subjected to severe torture. The two men have been sentenced to death on charges including “rebellion, waging war against God, corruption on earth, membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), gathering classified information, and conspiracy against national security.”

The letter highlights a statement from fellow political prisoners in Evin’s wards 4 and 8, as well as from the women’s section, strongly condemning the death sentences. The prisoners describe these rulings as a reflection of the Iranian regime’s desperation and urge the global community to act against the use of the death penalty in Iran.

FOFIAF joins the call to save Ehsani and Hassani, urging international bodies and Nordic governments to act swiftly in overturning the death sentences and securing the release of all political prisoners in Iran. The committee emphasizes that the Iranian regime has shown signs of retreat under international pressure, and now is the time for decisive action.
