NCRI – Javad Larijani, the Iranian regime’s theoretician of torture and execution showed his rage and rejected the appointment of Asma Jahangir by the Human Rights Council to replace Ahmad Shaheed as the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran.
According to the Human Rights Headquarters news website on September 3 Larijani said: “The Islamic Republic considers the appointment of a special rapporteur fundamentally unjustified and unacceptable.”
He added: “The Islamic Republic has always had a principled position towards the appointment of a Special Rapporteur of the country and this appointment is due to double standards and selective approach towards certain countries within the framework of the Human Rights Council.”
It should be pointed out that Asma Jahangir was appointed as the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran on Thursday, September 1 replacing Ahmed Shaheed. Asma Jahangir is a human rights defender from Pakistan. She is a leader of “Lawyers’ movement” in Pakistan and was jailed in 1983 under General Zia ul-Haq. She was also put under house arrest in 2007.
She has served as the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief between 2004 and 2010 and has repeatedly protested against violations of Human rights in Iran under the mullahs’ regime.
This replacement will take place at the end of Ahmad Shaheed’s mission. Ahmad Shaheed, former foreign minister of Maldives, was elected on 2011 by the United Nations Human Rights Council as the Special Rapporteur on Iran.
