Iran’s Regime Uses the Coronavirus to Push for Lifting of Sanctions

The Iranian regime has been lying about the outbreak of coronavirus and its consequences since day one. And there is absolutely no reason to suppose that Tehran’s behavior has changed for the better as the crisis has unfolded.

On Thursday, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK) announced that over 16,000 people have lost their lives so far.

The regime’s officials and its apologists in the West in their propaganda campaigns argue that the reason for the increasing number of coronavirus deaths in Iran is the shortage of drugs and medical equipment due to the international sanctions. As such, the regime is trying to use the coronavirus as an “opportunity” to force the lifting of the sanctions. At the same time, regime officials including its president Hassan Rouhani, claim that the country has no problem as far as its foreign currency and medical needs. Today Rouhani said: “There are about 4 million tons of basic goods in the country’s customs, which will be cleared and entered into the market in the coming days,” the official news agency IRNA reported.

Concerning the foreign exchange condition of the regime in the Iranian fiscal year of 1399 (March 2020 to March 2021), Rouhani said: “The Central Bank has provided a good report on the country’s foreign exchange conditions. We will have no problem with our foreign exchange for the year 1399. The priority to provide foreign exchange will be for the health sector, pharmaceutical and medical needs, and the second priority will be for basic goods that we will not have problems until the end of 1399,”

Rouhani added: “The first part of our discussion was about basic goods and medicine, medical equipment, and how it should be provided up to the end of 1399, and what foreign exchange resources we have and what measures should be taken in this regard. The second part was about the customs, where today there are about 4 million tons of basic goods in the customs. The goods that have been purchased, and after observing the necessary regulations… will be released from customs and enter the country.”

Rouhani’s remarks and the rejection of foreign aid by the regime and preventing the team of Doctors Without Borders to build a hospital in Iran all indicate that the regime’s intention is not to help the people, but to use the coronavirus as an “opportunity” to lift the sanctions. And therefore, as Mrs. Maryam Rajavi said: “To those who because of the sanctions shed crocodile tears for the religious fascism one must say: Have some sympathy for the people of Iran. Compel the regime to accept observers, reporters, and international delegations and relief. The aids must be directly provided to the needy people.
