Iran: At Least 110 Executed in July – Is a Massacre Like 1988 Underway?
In its recent report, “Is a Human Catastrophe Unfolding in Iran’s Prisons?”, Iran Human Rights Monitor warns that following the 12-day war, the Islamic Republic has entered a new phase of physical elimination — a campaign aimed at exterminating political prisoners, with chilling parallels to the 1988 massacre of political detainees.
At dawn on Sunday, July 27, political prisoners Behrooz Ehsani Eslamlou and Mehdi Hassani were executed in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj — killed in silence, without the chance to bid farewell to their families. They are the latest victims of a criminal and bloodstained regime that uses the death penalty systematically to crush dissent.
Mehdi Hassani was arrested in September 2022 while attempting to leave the country in Zanjan. Behrouz Ehsani Eslamlou was arrested at his home in Tehran in December 2022. Both were later transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.
According to HRANA, at the end of September 2024, Hassani and Eslamlou were tried at Branch 26 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. They were convicted of membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), baghi (armed rebellion), moharebeh (enmity against God), efsad-e-fel-arz (corruption on earth), collecting classified information, and collusion against national security.

CSIS Warns Threats from Iran in Canada Could Increase This Year, And It Is Using Criminals to Target Critics
Canada’s spy agency is warning that threats from Iran’s theocratic regime could increase this year and Tehran will continue to use members of criminal gangs to target its critics in Canada. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service told The Globe this week it is investigating death threats in Canada orchestrated by the republic of Iran. And depending on developments in the Middle East, such threats could escalate here, CSIS cautioned.
The spy agency issued its warning after it emerged that two Canadian journalists working for a London-based Persian news outlet have faced threats from Iran. One was told repeatedly they would be abducted, placed in a bag and smuggled out of the country if they did not stop reporting.
Lebanon Slams Iran Opposition to Hezbollah Disarmament as ‘Unacceptable’
Lebanon slammed what it called “flagrant and unacceptable interference” by Iran on Saturday after an adviser to the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader expressed opposition to the disarmament of its ally Hezbollah.
The Lebanese cabinet ordered the army on Tuesday to draw up a plan to establish exclusive government control over weapons by the end of the year — a move that would mean disarming Hezbollah.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is certainly opposed to the disarmament of Hezbollah,” Ali Akbar Velayati, international affairs adviser to Ali Khamenei, was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.
BCFIF Reiterates Call on UK Government to Intervene to Save Lives of Political Prisoners and Prevent Massacre in Iran’s Prisons
The British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCFIF) is alarmed over reports of Iranian authorities transferring another five political prisoners to Qezelhessar Prison on Friday, which is notorious for being an execution site. The five political prisoners identified by campaigners as Vahid Bani Amerian, 33, Babak Alipour, 34, Shahrokh Daneshvarkar, 58, Mohammad Taghavi, 59, and Pouya Ghobadi, 33, were sentenced to death on charges of membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) following unfair trials.
Their transfer raises fear of the five being at risk of imminent execution as it resembles the cases of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, two political prisoners executed recently by the regime on similar charges. Even behind bars, they took part in the “No to Executions Tuesdays”. Their courage to stand up to injustice and tyranny is a source of hope and inspiration.
As we warned previously, the surge in executions since 2022 nationwide protests, and in particular in recent months, indicate that the regime is preparing another massacre in the country’s prison reminiscent of the 1988 mass executions. Like 37 ago, the regime is using the judiciary and politically motivated charges and execution to eliminate any organised opposition amid growing popular dissent.

‘Legalized Murder’: Global Alarm Sounds as Iran’s Regime Prepares to Execute More PMOI Supporters
A wave of high-level international condemnation has erupted over the Iranian regime’s latest crackdown on political prisoners, with former Costa Rican President Miguel Ángel Rodríguez describing the situation in Iran as a “nightmare” of “legalized murder” and “state-sponsored” killings. This alarm was echoed by Amnesty International, which issued an urgent warning on August 8, demanding that Iranian authorities “must immediately halt any plans” to execute five political prisoners affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The global outcry signals a growing recognition that the regime is escalating its campaign of political terror, turning its prisons into systematic killing fields.
Political Prisoner Arghavan Fallahi Transferred to Qarchak Prison
Political prisoner Arghavan Fallahi has been transferred to Qarchak Prison, following months of solitary confinement and torture. Arghavan Fallahi, a political prisoner who endured over six months of intense interrogations and both psychological and physical torture, has been transferred to the notorious Qarchak Prison in Varamin (46 kms southeast of Tehran), among other female political prisoners taken there from Evin Prison. This follows two months in solitary confinement at Fashafouyeh Prison and an additional period held in an undisclosed location.
Arghavan Fallahi was arrested in Tehran on January 25, 2025. The charges brought against her include “propaganda against the state” and “supporting an opposition organization.” Her arrest and interrogations were conducted directly under the supervision of the Intelligence Organization of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Intelligence Department of the Judiciary.

Southampton, UK – August 9, 2025 – The Academics in Exile Association, supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), held a public photo exhibition and bookstall in Southampton to emphasize the value of every human life and draw attention to five MEK-supporting political prisoners now facing imminent execution.
Hossein Mousavian, A Former Iranian Regime Diplomat, Has Been Dismissed from Princeton University After Fifteen Years
Princeton University in the United States announced that Hossein Mousavian, a former Iranian regime diplomat, has “retired” from the university. Mousavian is accused of being involved in the assassinations of several prominent opponents of the Iranian regime in Europe. In an official statement, Princeton University described Mousavian’s departure as “retirement.” Mousavian served as a “Middle East security and nuclear policy expert” in Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security. He is accused of involvement in the assassination of at least 24 Iranian regime opponents in Europe during the 1980s and 1990s, including Shapour Bakhtiar, Fereydoun Farrokhzad, Abdolrahman Ghassemlou, and Kazem Rajavi.
More Than 125 Political Prisoners Are Being Held in Inhumane and Unbearable Conditions in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz
Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, which has an official capacity of 100 people, is currently holding more than 125 political prisoners. These inmates face numerous problems, including overcrowding and a severe health crisis, and have announced that if their problems are not addressed immediately, they will go on hunger strike. The Karun Human Rights Organization reported on Saturday, August 9, that following mass arrests after the 12-day war, at least 80 of those detained were transferred to Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz. After enduring physical and psychological torture and forced confessions, these individuals were sentenced to long prison terms, severely increasing the population of this ward.
Iran’s Falling Unemployment Rate Masks a Deepening Labor Crisis
Official statistics hide mass joblessness, poor job quality, and a shrinking workforce amid economic despair. The Iranian regime is touting its lowest unemployment rate in two decades — just 7.3 percent in spring 2025, according to the Statistical Center of Iran. At first glance, this could suggest a healthier labor market. But a closer examination of the numbers shows that this decline has little to do with job creation and much to do with statistical manipulation, misleading definitions, and the exclusion of millions from the workforce count.
Official data claims that 25.12 million people aged 15 and above were employed in spring 2025, an increase of 377,000 from the previous year. The economic participation rate — the share of working-age people who are employed or actively seeking work — remained unchanged at 41.2 percent.
Iranian Regime Intensifies Push for Internet Restrictions to Curb Public Dissent
Officials renew calls for a “National Information Network” to replace global access, citing “security threats” and “war conditions.” In the face of growing public resistance and mounting online criticism, the Iranian regime continues to treat the Internet as a direct threat to its control. For years, regime authorities have regarded cyberspace with suspicion, seeing it as a battleground where censorship is challenged and information flows freely beyond their grasp.
Majid Khademi, head of the IRGC’s intelligence organization, recently renewed the call for tighter internet controls. Linking Israel’s June attack on the regime to what he described as “intelligence deception,” Khademi urged the regime’s parliament to expedite the long-delayed “National Information Network” — a domestic intranet designed to cut off Iranians from the global web.
