Monday, October 18, 2022 – 20 PM CET

  • Days: 33rd day
  • Protests: 193 cities
  • Fatalities: 400+ estimated deaths, 224 identified by MEK

Rallies started today with students protesting in several cities. A government spokesperson visiting Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran was confronted with a defiant crowd who called him a scoundrel, chanting “Shame on you!” and “We don’t want a murder as guest”.

Protests continued in other universities in Tehran as well as several major cities, such as Babolsar, Tabriz, and Rasht. Protesters chanted slogans “Not for Gaza, nor for Lebanon, I’ll sacrifice my life for Iran!”, “Death to the oppressor, be it the Shah or the Leader [Khamenei]!”, “For each person killed, there will be a thousand more following his/her path!”, and “Canons, tanks & guns are no longer effective, tell my mother she no longer has a daughter.” (referring to the likelihood that she might be killed during the protests)

Drivers have joined the nationwide strike. In a leaflet distributed today, they wrote: “We, the truck drivers from all across the country, announce that we will not start our engines from October 27 to support the nationwide strikes of the Iranian people.”

Wary of Public Awareness and Protests, Tehran Increased Internet Censorship, State-run Newspapers Says

Following widespread calls from various state officials who blamed the internet for the popular uprisings and called for a complete shutdown of foreign messengers and stricter internet censorship, the state-run Aftab-e-Yazd newspaper reported today that the Iranian regime has implemented a Russian and Chinese-style filtering model.

According to this report, the regime is systematically blocking IPs that use filter breakers.

The state-run Aftab-e-Yazd quotes Amirhossein Zarrin, an IT expert, as saying: “We were always afraid of this mistake of internet restrictions, which unfortunately happened. They used to filter Telegram and now they did it with WhatsApp and Instagram too, which of course worsened the situation. Because previously, when they restricted Telegram, people had not taken their businesses to Telegram that much and they had invested more on Instagram. But now, the livelihood of several thousand families has been jeopardized by the filtering of Instagram.”

“In the last few days, almost no VPN is working. In fact, they have identified the IPs and then blocked them. This shows that they are using Russian and Chinese algorithms,” the IT expert concluded.
