Iran Protests: Miandoab Prison Joins 58th Week of Nationwide Hunger Strike Against Executions

As the Iranian regime escalates its execution spree, prisoners across 38 prisons have joined the 58th week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign, protesting the surge in state-sanctioned killings. This week, Miandoab Prison in East Azerbaijan Province became the latest to join the movement, with inmates announcing a hunger strike in defiance of the government’s brutal use of the death penalty.

Since February 19, the regime has executed 85 people, including 53 in the past week alone, with 24 of them belonging to the persecuted Kurdish and Baluch communities. One prisoner was even publicly hanged in Esfarayen, a chilling reminder of the regime’s strategy to instill fear.

The prisoners’ hunger strike is part of a broader movement involving human rights defenders, families of victims, and activists across Iran and the world, calling for an immediate halt to executions. The regime’s use of capital punishment has intensified, particularly before Nowruz, plunging families into mourning.

The growing participation in the prison hunger strikes signals mounting resistance against the state’s repression as international pressure mounts for urgent action to stop Iran’s execution machine.

A translated version of the statement of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” Campaign follows:

“No to Executions Tuesdays” Campaign Continues in 38 Prisons in Its 58th Week with the Addition of Miandoab Prison

The Iranian regime has executed 85 people in just the first two weeks of the month of Esfand on the Persian calendar (February 19 – March 5, 2024). In the past week alone, at least 53 individuals were executed, including 24 Kurdish and Baluch citizens. Additionally, one person was brutally hanged in public in Esfarayen.

These barbaric executions, particularly on the eve of Nowruz, which have plunged hundreds of families into mourning, clearly demonstrate that this medieval regime has no goal other than to instill terror in society. Through repression, torture, and executions, it seeks only to delay its inevitable downfall.

In response to this state-sponsored violence against defenseless people, many Iranians and human rights activists across Iran and the world, along with committed prisoners in various prisons, have joined the “No to Executions” campaign, condemning these criminal executions in Iran.

Last week, a group of prisoners in Miandoab Prison, located in East Azerbaijan Province, announced that starting Tuesday, March 4, 2025, they would join the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign and go on a hunger strike in protest of death sentences.

Once again, we call on all awakened consciences around the world to take urgent and serious action to stop this execution machine.
