Member of Assembly of Experts: “PMOI has stroked irrecoverable blows” to the Iranian regime

According to state news agency IRNA, Khazali, in a speech in the city of Varamin, said: “Islamic Republic of Iran is faced with the sedition by Monafeqin (PMOI). These people stood against velayat-e faqih (the absolute clerical rule), chanting slogans like Iranian Republic, they tore the portraits of Imam Khomeini (founder of the clerical dictatorship) and our current leader and went as far as setting fire to them.”

He added: “If the punishment for these Monafeqin and others who create chaos is imprisonment then they must be put in prison, and if it is execution then they should be executed”.

Within the clerical rule, the 86-member Assembly of Experts has the responsibility to appoint the Supreme Leader, monitor his performance and remove him if he is deemed incapable of fulfilling his duties. The assembly usually holds two sessions a year.

Even though by definition members should be elected for an eight-year term, only clerics can join the assembly and candidates for election are vetted by the Guardian Council which consists of six theologians appointed by the Supreme Leader and six jurists nominated by the head of judiciary who is also appointed by the Supreme Leader.
