In a revealing interview with Al Hurra, former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton described the Iranian regime’s escalating struggles following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria. Bolton emphasized that Assad’s downfall represents a “major blow to Iran,” disrupting Tehran’s long-standing strategy of regional dominance through proxy militias.
Bolton highlighted how the regime’s influence has been significantly undermined, with key proxies facing severe setbacks. He underscored that these developments illustrate Tehran’s growing isolation and inability to maintain its regional ambitions. “The complete removal of threats in the region depends on the fall of the Iranian regime,” he said, calling for continued international pressure to counter Tehran’s destabilizing actions.
The former ambassador to the United Nations also praised recent airstrikes targeting Iranian facilities, describing them as “effective measures” that weaken Tehran’s military capabilities and limit its reach. He noted that these operations, including strikes on missile production sites and Russian-made air defense systems, have disrupted Iran’s efforts to project power.

Bolton further discussed Iran’s reliance on illegal networks to fund its proxies, including drug trafficking operations. This dependency, he argued, reflects the regime’s declining capacity to sustain influence through legitimate means and exposes its structural weaknesses.
In the interview, Bolton emphasized the need for a coordinated international response to address Iran’s regional activities and internal instability. He warned that “as long as the regime remains, the risks of escalation and instability will persist.”
Bolton’s remarks underline the pivotal moment for the Iranian regime’s leadership as its regional strategy collapses and domestic dissent grows. He called on the global community to take firm action against Tehran’s ambitions, advocating for comprehensive measures to weaken the regime’s grip both at home and abroad.
