Romanian Parliamentary Committee Urges Action to Halt Executions of Six Political Prisoners in Iran

The Romanian Parliamentary Committee for a Free Iran has issued an urgent appeal to the international community, calling for immediate intervention to prevent the execution of six Iranian political prisoners sentenced to death on charges of affiliation with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and armed rebellion. These sentences, the Committee emphasized, were delivered following months of interrogation and torture, under conditions where the accused were denied basic legal rights.

The Committee highlighted that these death sentences form part of the Iranian regime’s broader strategy to suppress dissent and create a climate of fear within society. “The regime uses executions to deter protests and stifle opposition, particularly as its proxy forces in the Middle East face significant setbacks,” the statement read. It further noted that Iran’s human rights record has been condemned 71 times by the United Nations and the Third Committee for Human Rights for violations, including extrajudicial killings and torture.

The Committee cited alarming figures, revealing that over 480 individuals have been executed in Iran in the past four months alone, despite promises of reform by the regime’s president. It condemned the regime’s treatment of detainees, including denial of legal counsel, family visits, and other inhumane practices.

“We call on the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the European Union to take immediate and decisive action to prevent these executions and to secure the release of all political prisoners,” the appeal urged.

The letter was signed by members and former members of the Romanian Parliament, including Mr. Dan-Cristian Popescu, Ms. Maria Grecea, Mr. Mihai Deacunu, Ms. Maria Eugenia Barna, Dr. Titus Pasca, and Ms. Cristina Iurisniți.
