Swiss Committee Urges Action to Halt Executions of Political Prisoners in Iran

The Swiss Committee for Democracy and Secularism in Iran issued a letter on December 6, 2024, to international institutions, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressing deep concern over the death sentences of six political prisoners in Iran.

The committee highlighted the unjust treatment and severe conditions faced by the prisoners, including prolonged interrogations, torture, and baseless charges of association with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). The letter underscored the prisoners’ dire health conditions and called their sentencing a blatant violation of international human rights standards.

The committee urged the United Nations, the European Union, and its member states to act swiftly to annul the death sentences and ensure the immediate release of all political prisoners in Iran. The Swiss lawmakers emphasized that failure to act would jeopardize the prisoners’ lives and undermine international trust in human rights institutions.
