NCRI – Nurses in Gerash Medical College, in Iran’s southern Fars Province, referred once again to the college’s director of nursing on Monday September 26 to protest against their low wages.

The nurses have previously written many letters of protest to the college’s president as well as Deputy Treatment Director and head of the hospital, only to receive no response.

According to state-run news agency inot.ir on September 25, “Zahra Joshan”, director of nursing at Gerash Medical College, pointed to the protests by nurses at the college’s hospital over their low wages and said: “Nurses come to me and complain that their wages are 1.5 times lower compared to neighboring cities such as Lar and Jahrom. We have regular dispatches from hospitals in Jahrom, Lar, Lamerd, Khalaj, etc. to Gerash Hospital. Meanwhile, our wages are actually 1.5 times less than theirs.”

She added: “When we protest about this, we are told that the difference in wages is due to higher earnings at those medical centers while there is an ICU and a heart surgery unit in our hospital which you can’t find elsewhere.”

Gerash is situated some 355 kilometers south-east of Shiraz.
