The Iranian regime’s Ministry of Intelligence has transferred political prisoner Mehdi Vafaei-Sani, who was sentenced to six years in prison, from Evin Prison to the solitary confinement cells of the Intelligence Detention Center in Qom. Under the pretext that he attempted to save the lives of other prisoners during the bombardment of Evin Prison last July, the henchmen fabricated a new case against him. Through this fabrication, they intend to retry him on the charge of ‘Moharebeh’ (waging war against God) and sentence him to death.
Mehdi, who was held in Ward 7 of Evin Prison, was summoned on September 30, 2025, under the pretext of a family visit. However, before reaching the visitation hall, he was forced into a car and taken away.
Mehdi Vafaei, 39, was arrested on June 8, 2022, in Parand, Tehran, and sentenced to six years in prison on charges of ‘propaganda against the state’ and ‘communication with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)‘. During the fire at Evin Prison on October 15, 2022, he was shot and wounded by prison authorities.
Mehdi’s mother, Mrs. Shiva Esmaeili, is a political prisoner incarcerated in Qarchak Prison. She was arrested in Tehran in March 2023 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Mehdi’s cousin, Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani, is also imprisoned in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. He has been sentenced to death on charges of membership in the PMOI.
