Iran: Hunger Strike by Political Prisoners in Unit 4 of Ghezel Hesar Prison Following Transfer to Solitary Confinement

Following a raid by anti-riot guards on political prisoners in Unit 4 of Ghezel Hesar Prison on the evening of March 29 and the transfer of all of them to solitary confinement, the political prisoners went on a hunger strike. Subsequently, all contact and communication between the prisoners and the outside world have been severed. The families, especially those of prisoners sentenced to death such as Abolhassan Montazer and Vahid Bani-Amerian, are deeply concerned due to a complete lack of information about the well-being of their loved ones.

Following the transfer of prisoners to solitary confinement, PMOI members Mohammad Taghavi and Akbar Daneshvarkar were hanged by the executioners on March 30, while Babak Alipour and Pouya Ghobadi were executed on March 31.

Some of the prisoners transferred to solitary confinement suffer from severe illnesses. Ali Moezi, 73, who has been imprisoned for a total of 18 years since the 1980s for supporting the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), suffers from cancer and multiple ailments such as arthritis, severe kidney problems, and high blood pressure. Asadollah Hadi, 69, who has also been imprisoned for years since the 1980s for supporting the PMOI, suffers from cardiovascular and brain diseases, as well as spinal problems.

A number of the political prisoners in Ghezel Hesar Prison are among the founders of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign. This campaign, which began in Ghezel Hesar Prison in February 2024 and has thus far expanded to 56 prisons, marked its 114th week this past Tuesday.

The Iranian Resistance once again calls for an international fact-finding mission to visit Iran’s prisons and meet with prisoners, particularly the political prisoners in Ghezel Hesar Prison, and urges immediate action for the release of all political prisoners.
