Iran: Third Day of Hunger Strike and Sit-in by 1,500 Prisoners in Ghezel Hesar’s Unit 2 to Protest Wave of Executions

  • Henchmen Install Jamming Devices to Prevent News of Prisoners’ Strike from Spreading

The collective hunger strike and sit-in by prisoners in Unit 2 of Karaj’s Ghezel Hesar Prison, protesting the execution wave and the transfer of inmates to solitary confinement for execution, entered its third day today. In this protest, 1,500 prisoners have halted their daily activities and staged a sit-in, demanding an end to the cycle of killings and the revocation of death sentences.

The strike began on Monday, July 13, following an unprecedented surge in executions and the transfer of six death-row prisoners to solitary confinement. Holding placards reading ‘No to Execution’ in the corridors of Unit 2, the prisoners chanted protest slogans, demonstrating their resistance against the regime’s execution machine.

Fearing the scale of the protest and seeking to prevent the leak of news and videos from the sit-in, the clerical regime yesterday installed jamming devices inside the prison to cut off communication with the outside world and block reports. Simultaneously, prison henchmen and guards have threatened to raid the wards, confiscate mobile phones, and conduct violent searches. These repressive measures have been accompanied by widespread disruptions in the internet network and telecommunication lines around the prison area.

The Iranian Resistance once again calls on the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and all international human rights bodies to take immediate action to halt the clerical regime’s execution machine. It also urges the dispatch of an international fact-finding mission to visit Ghezel Hesar Prison and meet with the striking prisoners.
