Crying Out Against Poverty, Corruption, and Executions

On Monday and Tuesday, November 3 and 4, various cities across Iran were the scene of uprisings and protests by different segments of the population against poverty, corruption, repression, and injustice:

Tuesday, November 4:

  • The 93rd week of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign was marked by a hunger strike of political prisoners in 54 prisons across the country. The families of prisoners sentenced to death also gathered in several cities, demanding the abolition of the inhumane death penalty. A statement from the prisoners read: ‘Stand against this state-sponsored killing with the cry of “No to Execution” and do not allow the killing to continue in silence.’ The families held signs reading ‘Do not execute’ and ‘Political prisoners must be freed,’ while chanting ‘No to execution.’

Monday, November 3:

  • Retirees of the Telecommunication Company of Iran held coordinated and nationwide protests in Tehran and at least 17 other cities, including Isfahan, Tabriz, Sanandaj, Kermanshah, Zanjan, Hamedan, Ahvaz, Mashhad, Rasht, Shiraz, Borujerd, Khoy, Marivan, Bijar, Lorestan, Shahr-e Kord, and Hormozgan. They chanted, ‘We built the telecom, the IRGC took it, we lost,’ and ‘Hossein, Hossein is their slogan, theft and plunder is their business.’
  • In the Lavan region, employees of the Iranian Offshore Oil Company protested against job and wage discrimination, illegal tax deductions, and the elimination of hardship and family separation allowances. They insisted on the independence of the oil industry’s pension fund and the restoration of their violated rights.
  • In Kermanshah, nurses from the University of Medical Sciences gathered in front of the university building, chanting ‘We will not forgive corruption and injustice,’ demanding eight months of overdue salaries and benefits.
  • Workers at the ‘Makian Alvan’ slaughterhouse in the city of Rey went on strike to protest three months of unpaid wages.
  • In Sanandaj, taxi drivers launched a general strike.
  • In Khuzestan, farmers from Ramhormoz protested in front of the district governor’s office, shouting, ‘They don’t give us water, insurance doesn’t cover our losses, how are we supposed to live?’
  • In Isfahan, angry poultry farmers warned that if the shortage of feed and government inaction continue, they will refuse to deliver chicken to government distribution systems.
