Iran: Inevitable Retreat of Regime’s Judiciary and Prison Guards in the Face of Unity and Steadfastness of 1,500 Death-Row Prisoners

  • Execution of sentences for prisoners in Unit 2 of Ghezel Hesar suspended
  • Six prisoners transferred to solitary confinement for execution will be returned to general wards
  • Cases of death-row prisoners in Unit 2 of Ghezel Hesar to be reviewed

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after 16 days of a hunger strike by 1,500 death-row prisoners in Unit 2 of Ghezel Hesar Prison, a delegation from the regime’s judiciary and prison guards—including Jamshidi (Director General of the Tehran Province Prisons Organization), Tarhani (Head of the so-called Pardon and Clemency Commission of the regime’s judiciary in Tehran Province), Azizi (Warden of Ghezel Hesar Prison), Ghobadi (Prison Health Deputy), Kamarei (Head of Prison Intelligence Protection), Rezvani (Head of Unit 2), Ashrafabadi (Head of Unit 2 Intelligence Protection), and a group of ward heads and repressive security agents—arrived at the site to prevent the strike from spreading.

In a meeting attended by four prisoners from each of the four halls of Unit 2 on strike, this delegation attempted to convince them to end the hunger strike by sowing division among them. However, the steadfastness and unity of the prisoners thwarted this attempt, and the henchmen were forced to commit to suspending the execution of death sentences in this unit until the drug-trafficking law is amended, and to returning the six death-row prisoners, who had been transferred to solitary confinement for execution, to the general wards. They also committed to re-examining the cases of all death-row prisoners in this unit within six months.

The striking prisoners emphasized that they remain fully vigilant and prepared to resume their strike if the henchmen, as always, attempt to violate these agreements.

The Iranian Resistance, while congratulating the striking prisoners, emphasizes that this brilliant victory once again demonstrated that the only response to the machinery of suppression and execution of religious fascism is decisiveness and steadfastness. The Iranian Resistance also once again calls on the international community to support the demands of the prisoners and to take immediate action to save the lives of death-row prisoners in various prisons across Iran.
