Students Chant: “University Is Not a Military Barrack,” “We Oppose Heightened Security at the University,” “The University Security Is an Agent of the Rulers,” “Girls’ Dormitory Is Like a Prison Ward”
Today, Sunday, April 24, 2022, hundreds of students at Tehran University of Science and Technology protested against the repressive actions of the security and intelligence agents called “university security,” including launching a so-called guidance patrol inside the university, interfering with students’ clothing and beating one of the students on April 19. The demonstration was held outside the university’s security center.
The protesting students chanted: “The university security is an agent of the rulers,” “(addressing other students), Have no fear, we are all together,” “University is not a military barrack,” “We oppose heightened security at the university,” “Girls’ dormitory is like a prison ward.”
At the rally, the students announced: “We are fed up with the university security forces. We are not living in the 80s when one (the state) can force students to adopt their tastes and beliefs based on the Stone Age using brute force and clubs. The right to freedom of choice must be respected. We, the students, strongly condemn the security forces’ presence at the university and the atmosphere of intimidation they have created.”
Beginning two weeks ago, upon the reopening of the universities after a two-year lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the mullahs have taken up more repressive measures at the universities, including launching repressive motorized patrols in the courtyards of Tehran and Amir Kabir universities and have been harassing students under the guise of controlling the students’ clothes, socks and hair.
