Iran: Truckers’ Strike Expands to 152 Cities on Tenth Day
Widespread Public Support, Regime Warnings and Threats, and Unenforceable Promises
The nationwide strike by truck drivers and heavy vehicle operators continued into its tenth consecutive day on Saturday, May 31, 2025, extending to 152 cities across the country. Cities such as Tiran, Baghmalek, Golgohar, Mahabad, Poldokhtar, Mehran, Charmahin, and Aligudarz also joined this national strike.
Numerous videos from the country’s roads, particularly in Isfahan, Kermanshah, and southern transit routes, show that truckers have refrained from loading and moving goods. Reports have indicated a complete halt in truck traffic on some main routes, including the Mehran-to-central corridor.
In response, the regime attempted to counter the strike through threats and enticements. Mehran Ghorbani, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, announced that “all the truckers’ demands will be addressed within the next month.” However, the truckers have asserted that they do not accept verbal promises lacking guarantees.
Gholamreza Dehghan, a member of the regime’s parliament representing Kazerun, acknowledged in a parliamentary session that “drivers’ rights have been neglected for years,” and the government has shown indifference to their demands (ISNA News Agency – May 30, 2025).
Additionally, a banner placed at the entrance of the Yazd Province Road Maintenance and Transportation Department terminal by its public relations office warned: “If you do not proceed to transport goods, you will be deprived of all legal benefits.”
On the other hand, over recent days, suppressive forces have arrested several noble drivers in the provinces of Khuzestan, Gilan, Hamedan, Fars, and Kurdistan on charges of filming and reporting to the media. Some of these detainees have been subjected to pressure and torture for forced confessions. The Public Relations Office of the IRGC in Khuzestan announced: “Individuals with known identities who, in recent days, had recorded and sent multiple videos of gatherings and the truckers’ strike at the Bandar Khomeini freight terminal to hostile networks have been identified and arrested by the IRGC Intelligence Organization of Khuzestan.” (Student News Network– May 29, 2025)
On the ninth day of the truckers’ strike, some bus operators also joined them. At the same time, various segments and professional groups across society—including teachers, retirees, nurses, oil workers, educators, and human rights advocates—rose in widespread support of the strikers in different cities. Additionally, groups of merchants and shopkeepers in Tehran, prisoners, shopkeepers in Kermanshah, students at Bushehr University, and graduates from the province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad issued statements in support of the strike by truckers and heavy vehicle drivers.
