The European Parliament has adopted a resolution condemning “systemic oppression, inhumane conditions and arbitrary detentions” by the clerical regime in Iran, approving the text by 524 votes in favor, 3 against and 41 abstentions.
In the resolution, lawmakers cite a pattern of arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture, extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, collective punishment and abusive detention conditions, and say estimates of deaths during recent protests range from several thousand to more than 35,000, including women, children and elderly people, with EU citizens among the victims.
MEPs call for an end to violence against civilians, an end to executions and repression, and the release of those held in arbitrary detention, including foreign and dual nationals. The text also urges an immediate abolition of the death penalty and demands an end to targeting doctors and healthcare workers for treating injured protesters.

Debate highlights opposition outreach and focus on the IRGC
During the debate, Juan Fernando López Aguilar said a majority of the chamber reaffirmed its commitment and solidarity with Iran’s opposition and a resistance movement that demonstrated in Berlin last weekend, adding that the European Union should be ready to support the establishment of a democratic and pluralistic system in Iran.
The adopted text places particular emphasis on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, describing it as central to repression and urging expanded targeted sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, against those responsible for abuses—alongside calls to enforce measures and prevent circumvention.
