Iran’s “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign Marks 97th Week Amid Rising Student Repression

The 97th week of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign in Iran coincides with the upcoming Student Day on December 7, a date historically recognized as a symbol of student activism against dictatorship. Since December 7, 1953, universities have remained “the beating heart of the struggle against tyranny,” the campaign statement reads.

The campaign commemorates all those who have lost their lives in the fight for freedom, particularly students who have been victims of forced disappearance. Among them is Saeed Zeinali, who vanished following the 1999 attack on Tehran University dormitories. “This is one of hundreds of students and citizens victimized by the oppressive rulers, an immense injustice for their families and grieving mothers,” the statement emphasizes.

Despite decades of repression, imprisonment, and executions, student activism persists. Currently, Ehsan Faridi, a 23-year-old political prisoner and university student, faces the death penalty simply for advocating freedom. “His life is in danger,” the campaign warns.

The statement also highlights the recent surge in executions. During the first ten days of the Persian month of Azar (since November 22), nearly 100 prisoners were executed, including two women. One execution was carried out publicly to instill fear among the population. According to the campaign, this brings the total number of executions in the Persian year 1404 (beginning on March 21, 2025) to 1,564, an unprecedented figure over the past three decades, sparking global condemnation.

In response, the campaign calls on political communities, student activists, and all conscientious individuals to support prisoners facing execution and stand with families seeking justice. “Raise the voice of ‘No to Execution’ by all possible means to strip the regime of its main tool of repression and pave the way for freedom and self-determination,” the statement urges.

This week, 55 prisons across Iran are participating in the campaign with hunger strikes, including Evin Prison, Ghezel Hesar, Tehran Central, Khorrin Prison in Varamin, Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, Zahedan (women and men), Mashhad, Tabriz, Urmia, and many others. The campaign continues to shine a light on the plight of prisoners and demand accountability from the Iranian regime.

The 97th week of “No to Execution Tuesdays” falls on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, reaffirming the movement’s persistent resistance against state-sanctioned executions.
